I bought this laptop because I liked the specs and the price wasn't unreasonable. I like the beautiful display, full keyboard, discrete graphics card. But here are some things I think people who are looking to buy should know.
The display is an IPS (In Plane Switching), the advantages of this is that you can view from all angles and the display remains bright and view-able, its a really beautiful display. Downside to this is that the refresh rate is topped out at approx 60fps, so if you're a hardcore gamer you may want a TN display. But 2in1 laptops are all IPS I believe so that is the sacrifice to make for a touchscreen.
Second, this laptop comes with 12gigs of RAM. I discovered when I opened it that there is a single slot for RAM filled with an 8gig RAM card What this must mean is 4gigs is built into the motherboard. Not sure whats compatible with the single slot but the most you could get out of it is 28gigs unless there is a way in the BIOS to disable the on board RAM (haven't checked)
The Hard Drive is slow. Annoyingly so. I got use to the Solid State Drive on my other laptop and so I'm spoiled. I decided to install a SSD M2 2280 Corsair 525Gig SATA SSD. The Corsair thankfully came with screws and the software to clone the drive. I created a bootable USB drive with the provided software, booted with the USB drive by entering BIOS (press F2 at logo screen) and setting the priority for the USB drive on bootup. From the USB drive I easily cloned the internal 1T HDD to my new 525G SSD and it automatically made the SSD the boot drive and I have the 1T HDD for file storage. I'm uploading a photo of the inside of the laptop for reference. The slot for the M2 2280 SSD drive is right next to the HDD.
For a sub 1k laptop, its a wonderful machine and I do not regret the purchase.

This laptop is very nice quality for the price.
The keys have very nice travel. Spacing is very good, my only drawback is the pattern of the arrows. I really hate the small up and down arrows. See picture. The keyboard is backlit, which is another plus.
The trackpad is very responsive. I am not one to like trackpads, but this is one of the best I have used. I would compare it to the trackpad on a Mac.
Graphics cards are Intel HD 620 and GeForce 940MX. While the GeForce is on the lower end of high end graphics card lists, it is in a laptop and does its job rather well driving both a monitor or the laptop display.
The display is big and very clear. At 1920x1080, it is great for consumption or extended use. Touches have been very accurate and doesn't feel like a fingerprint magnet. The display folds into a A frame or completely back to a tablet mode. But a 15 inch tablet is a bit large.
The case however...fingerprints everywhere.
Speakers do a really nice job. They are laptop speakers, but some of the better ones that I have heard.
Bloatware is minimal, for a Windows machine.
Heat, always a concern with laptops, seems to be very well ventilated.
Ports include 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB-C, HDMI, Headset, and proprietary charger on left and USB 2.0 and SD card on the right.
Battery life has been very good for me, not quite all day battery, but that also depends on what you are doing. gaming will drop the battery much quicker than web surfing.
Antenna range seems to be very strong. Connects up to AC 5 gHz.
This is a really nice offering from Acer. Proprietary charger and arrow key size are the only reason I dropped a star.

Decent 2-in-1 for Price

I'm writing my review now using the Acer Aspire R15 laptop. Given that, I'm mostly a Mac guy at home and a Win7 user at work, I was really curious to put Windows 10 through it's paces as well as see just how well a 2-in-1 device would work. While I've mostly enjoyed using it, it does come with some drawbacks.
Design
---------
This laptop has a beautiful and minimalist design to it. There's no disc drive, which means the machine can be made very thin - it's no Ultrabook or MacBook in terms of thinness however. The exterior totally comprised of a brushed, gunmetal color of silver - even the keyboard area. The screen is a big and beautiful 1080p resolution that really shines when watching iTunes movies in HD. The keyboard is comfortably spaced out and even includes a smaller 10-key in addition to the typical QWERTY design.
Weight was also something I wasn't prepared for. Using a MacBook Air or iPad at home and an Ultrabook at work has really spoiled me in how much I expect a PC to weigh. This thing isn't NEAR as heavy as some developer laptops I've had to use for work, but it's between 5-6 pounds. That, combined with the 15.6 size, makes this a big kahuna - so do some extra curls at the gym if you're not ready for that kind of weight.
Specs
--------
It's one thing if a laptop is beautiful - but above all else, it has to work. The Acer Aspire R15 that I got has an interesting mix of great and meh specs that equate to a good laptop for a general user and some occasional heavy usage.
Starting with the CPU, it's a dual core i7, 7th gen processor. I was a bit startled to see that it was a dual core and not a quad core. The model I opted for also included 12GB of RAM - so I was able to use Handbrake while multitasking with Edge and Office 365.
As far as ports go, there's a USB-C option, 2 USB 3 ports (1 charging) and a USB 2.0 part. Additionally, you have an HDMI port as well as an SD Card slot - which makes working with photos off our DSLR camera a breeze.
The real disappointment for me came with the hard drive. Sure, it's nice to have a 1TB hard drive, but come on - no solid state drive? I've gotten so spoiled by SSD, PCI-E and Flash drives that working with a platter drive has taken me getting used to - sure, Windows 10 has a setting that makes booting less painful - but reading and writing to the HD took longer than I was used to.
2-in-1
-------
One of the biggest draws for this item is the fact that you can fold it up and use it as a Windows 10 tablet. The 360 degree hinges also support tent mode and viewer mode as well. It's rare to find a 2-in-1 at this price with a combination of other attractive specs, such as the RAM and ports. Tent mode has made using this on the couch a joy and I like the fact that the keyboard doesn't respond when it's folded up, so when I accidentally pressed some keys, the computer thankfully ignored the keystrokes.
Overall
---------
This laptop is more than enough for general usage and with the addition of USB-C, 12GB of RAM and the tablet option - it is nice for even occasional power usage. Acer does hamper the unit down with their own bloatware (I forgot how much I hated having to uninstall it all) - but thankfully, with Windows 10 I was able to make a bootable installation on one of my thumb drives and install a vanilla version of the OS. It runs so much more smoother without McAfee and all the other junk that I'll honestly never use.
If you're in the market for a new Windows 10 PC and you're also looking for something that can be a tablet as well (come on Apple!) then this is a good place to start. Just make sure you do a clean install of the OS if you want to get the best experience possible to wipe all the pre-installed bloatware off.

My Acer has been good to me and works wonderfully for my daycare business I help run. It allows me the freedom of designing marketing, playing music for kids and processing payments because of the hinge design all of the mentioned tasks are capable.
The battery does drain quite fast but I am also multitasking like a maniac so that may be why. However, the charging cable is so light that it doesn't bother me to have to plug in to let it charge.
Super positive features are it's huge screen, I mean as you can see in my picture I had to sit at an angle where I could get it in the frame of my camera, I just wish it was 4K resolution. The keyboard has a 10 key, which I use daily while working and adding up figures so that is amazing, and the key board saves energy by putting the back lit keyboard to sleep when I'm not typing but the minute I hit a stroke it lights up again (love that).
When I went through my setup I was introduced to this awesome feature WiFi Sense which basically means that it can suggest networks that friends log into when I travel with my laptop so I know what networks I want to trust.
Top features for me and a reason for staying with the computer is the hinge trifecta design that goes from work computer, to tablet to pad and the speakers are really good. Customers are beaming when they see that I flip the computer to tablet mode to process payment for peace of mind and convenience. I might have to add another one just to have in a classroom for learning videos.

For the market this is designed for, this is an excellent value. This is not meant to be a $2000 laptop, however, it includes features that are not the norm for this price point either.
Starting with the aluminum chassis, it has a strong solid feel, without being too thin and not cheesy. It isn't a fully aluminum chassis, the bottom is plastic. But it doesn't feel cheap. And it doesn't squeak and move, as is the case with lesser quality laptops. I can live with this tradeoff, in particular because a fully aluminum chassis would be heavier, and hotter.
The screen is a full HD screen, and it has a decent rendering of images. In fact, it is hard to believe I wasn't looking at a $2000 computer screen, given the rich colors, the clarity, etc.
That same screen then converts into a huge tablet screen simply by folding it back over. You can also just put it in tent mode, display mode for presentations, or back to using as a tablet. This screen also has VERY strong and heavy duty hinges, that give you a soft gentle close.....we've all had laptops whose lids slam shut, this is not that laptop!
As for the horsepower part, it is an Intel Core i7, 7th generation processor. This is not common in laptops at this price. It has 12GB of RAM, 2GB of video memory. And it does have Nvida GEFORCE 940mx graphics with 2GB of DDR3 memory. This makes this a good gaming machine, in addition to a great workhorse of a laptop. It comes with a huge 1TB hard drive, something you won't find as standard in many laptops today. It isn't SSD, but I'd rather have the larger space from a tried and true hard drive technology.
There is a backlit keyboard, a numbers keypad, and a really decent trackpad. Frankly, the touchpad is a very important part of a laptop, and this touchpad exceeds my expectations. The only oddity is that like many other laptops that have a numbers keypad, the trackpad is placed more to the left than I'm used to, and after a short time, it feels normal.
There are stereo speakers, with a full Dolby Audio equalizer, and they are loud and clear...I really like the speakers on this, along with the Dobly equalizer. No external speakers are needed for anytime I've been using this computer. Music, movies, and simple sounds, sound really good....frankly, better than I could have expected.
There is no num lock or caps lock lights, and I know these are mostly gone from most computers today, but I do miss them. Acer was thinking smart when they decided to put a large icon on the screen that flashes up as you toggle those items on and off, showing the status as you toggle it. Smart! I still miss my lights, but this eases the pain a lot.
So, there is a lot more I could mention like the USB 3.1 reversible type "c" connector, or the 8 hour battery life, or even that it is Skype certified for business. There are USB ports, an HDMI port, even a SD card slot, all things that the most expensive laptops are dropping....thankfully Acer has not done that. Having ports available for things we all have in our briefcases now is important; we don't want to have to carry dongles to use those devices we own, and we don't want to simply toss them aside because they don't have a port on a new laptop for them.
You've probably been reading this long enough, you really should try it for yourself. BestBuy has an awesome return policy if you find it isn't for you, and they have a great display in the store, however you really have to work with this computer to understand how great it is.
I've included a couple of pictures with my review, which are photos of what I was watching on this laptop (on Netflix) and thought the pictures of the screen were more important than of the computer, because the screen alone would make this a worthwhile purchase!

Let me first start out by saying that I previously would not have considered an Acer computer. I tended to stick with the more common brand names. This Acer has changed my mind! :-) Acer has a good combination with this Aspire R 15. It's a 15.6" multi-touch screen running on a 7th Gen mobile i7 (Kaby Lake) processor with 12GB of RAM and a spinning 1TB hard drive. Please note that mobile i7 processors are only dual-core. Not quad-core like desktop i7 processors. After a very long setup and a few hours of software updates, I finally got to play around with the system a bit. Startups are quick, maybe 10 seconds from power on to login screen and another 6 seconds from login screen to desktop. Surprisingly, the shutdowns take a very long time (2+ minutes).
In terms of design, overall thickness with the rubber feet is right around 13/16", so fairly thin, compared to my previous laptops, without feeling flimsy. Brushed metal on the back of the monitor and brushed metal palm rest area make this laptop seem solid. I also like that the power cord snaps into place with a nice click. It won't be falling out anytime soon. But it does rotate nicely to get out of the way when flipping the monitor to the different modes. The battery is not removable and is not easily accessible, but there is a button on the bottom to temporarily disconnect the battery if you're in a situation that requires it. The trackpad does not look like it has buttons, but they are hidden and do click.
There are a few other design elements that I question. The volume rocker is not labeled (see picture). I had to grab the manual to figure it out. The numeric keypad is a bit cramped, the keys are narrower than the rest of the keyboard. This makes repeated number entry uncomfortable. I'm also put off by the slash key touching the enter key (see picture). Those things I can overlook over time, but I am bothered that the power button is on the back of the right hand side. An inconvenient placement especially when you're flipping the screen to and from tablet mode. There has been a few times where I've accidentally hit the button and sent the laptop into sleep mode. A quick change to the power profile fixed that though.
The Multi Point Touch Display, Tablet Mode, Tent Mode, Display mode are all very nice and I wasn't expecting to have these features for this price point, you really are getting a lot of bang for your buck, especially considering you have an i7 with 12GB instead of the obligatory 8GB of RAM.
Despite some of the design choices, this laptop really changed my impression of Acer laptops and I would not hesitate to consider another Acer laptop in the future.
The following does not reflect my review, but is offered as a tip to other owners:
I really would have liked to see an SSD hard drive in this machine. Having an SSD would really unleash the power of the processor and RAM. Out of curiosity, I decided to dig in to find out what it would take to replace the hard drive. The bottom of the laptop is one large plastic piece that is held on with 12 screws. Once the screws are removed, you must VERY CAREFULLY pry the bottom off. Start at one corner and work your way around. The hard drive is friction mounted (not screwed in) but take care to scoot the connector off the hard drive. I also noticed that the RAM chip is 8GB, so the additional 4GB must be embedded on the motherboard. I could not immediately find any information on upgradeability of the RAM. So I do not know if the system will accept a 16GB module instead. When putting the bottom plate back on, I found it easiest to snap on the sides first to ensure the ports were aligned then working my way around to snap on the front and back before installing the 12 screws.

I'm fairly happy with this purchase. It has the specs I want for the best price available, especially with clearance pricing. The only downside is it doesn't have SSD, and after having a laptop with SSD that lasted me for the last 5 years, it's a tough adjustment. The worst issue is that it takes forever to look for files through the computer, and to open the save file window from either a program that needs to save a file, or from my browser while trying to download a file. It also takes forever to open the file finder when I want to attach files to an email. I suspect this is mainly because I'm used to the super fast speed of an SSD, but I may look into this more to see if something else is going on.
Otherwise, it's a nice laptop. The touch screen and touch pad feel nice. The keys are slightly bouncy and not annoying to type on. I enjoy flipping the screen over and using it as a giant tablet when I want to read something or watch videos.
However, if you have to money for and SSD laptop with the same specs, go for that instead!

I picked up this laptop on Easter as part of the crazy deals going on. Only paid $700 with tax. Pulling it out of the box and starting it up, it was very slow...expected with all the bloatware and updating that needs to happen. After all installs were done, it just seemed very slow and had me almost taking it back.
I did a format and fresh install using the recovery on the PC and after that, its performing perfectly.
Pros: Screen looks great, fast performance, touch screen a plus and the price was great. The fact that its an i7 processor, 12 GB of RAM and a decent video card is what really drew me in.
Cons: Other than having to format right away, there are none. Don't expect it to perform perfectly out of the box, but hey, it could have been me.

Pro's: System is fast, does all I was expecting. Great display and pad. Backlite keyboard is good. Read negatives on the backlite because it turns off in 30 seconds, I just hit the "control" key to re-lite the backliting.
I would have given this 5 stars if I didn't have the wireless communication issue with my Netgear router (see Con's).
Con's: Wireless communication issue, contacted Acer (contacted Best Buy first, useless. They tried a couple of things, needed to pay them to get good technical support, they did try a replacement, same issue). Acer has trouble with 4-5 brands of wireless routers. Netgear is one of them, which I have. The Acer was causing my router to reset (worked on downloading large updates but browsing the internet caused issues).Purchased a Linksys, no further issues. Other negative is a Windows 10 issue, can't stop automatic updates.
I would recommend this 2-in-1, but be aware that you may need to change your wireless router.

I needed to update my laptop, so after checking all the new laptops and reading the Best Buy reviews, I picked the Acer - Aspire R 15 2-in-1 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 12GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce 940MX - 1TB Hard Drive - Steel gray. Beautiful screen, lite weight, solid performance...really a winner. Now all I need to do is replace the HDD with an SSD and this thing should really fly. I'll use the original HDD to back up my system then. Very happy with this laptop.

Considering the price you're going to pay for this, this laptop rocks. Love the touch screen and one of the only 2 n 1's that has a 10-key number pad which was crucial for my work. Very slim and durable. Power cord connects really solid. Only small down I would say is cooling fan can be a little aggressive but hey keeps the temp down so I'll take it. I put a 1TB SSD in this thing and its blindingly fast. Startup is only 7 seconds! Love this laptop. I actually own 3 of them now.

On the whole, I really like this computer. It runs quiet. The music it plays sounds great. The screen is bright and clear. The keys are large enough for my large fingers. And its speed is excellent. Except: do you see the "review summary"? I didn't type it that way-- the cursor just takes off and goes wherever it wants, rendering the text I'm typing much of the time as you see it there. So I have to go back, and fix it, which I do, if I can find where the cursor went... This is not good--because I am a writer! I primarily need the word processing and the memory (which is excellent, btw). Given this glitch, I meant the title to be ironic-- but then, well, the cursor typed itself!

My hard drive did not last an year. The computer crashed 5/18 & I purchased it in June of 2017. The reason I am giving it a 3 star is because since I have a new hard drive it has been fine. I did not have many files on this laptop nor had I downloaded any viruses; it started slowing down and eventually crashed. This is the first time Acer has ever failed me. I have not had any trouble out of previous products I have purchased from them.

I still have my old Acer laptop and have since bought (2) Toshiba machines to get larger hard drives or better performance. Buried both of those... The old Acer still works. l am liking this new unit so far. It is light, fast and has a reasonably sized touch screen. If it lasts as long as my old one, we are in for a long love affair.
