I got this to swap my 500GB SATA hard drive with a 256 GB Toshiba SSD. I wanted to be able to still use the hard drive as a portable drive. It worked well for the swap, and the price difference between the bare bones connections to migrate the hard drive contents to the SSD and this set up which allows for the swap and to use the old drive as a portable backup was minimal. I used the software included to copy the drive files and OS, but it flopped. The computer would not boot after copying the hard drive to the SSD and swapping them. The Toshiba SSD uses a program that you can download, NTI Echo I believe. That worked flawlessly. I copied my work files to the drive and I can now do almost all the work for my business with the laptop and portable drive. I recommend this set up.

In upgrading my laptop's hard drive to solid state, I needed something that allowed me to clone the existing drive to the new SSD unit. The Best Buy tech recommended buying an external drive case rather than just a cable. For the extra $10, I could use my original laptop drive in the case as an external drive instead of just having a one-time use cable laying around. After buying the case, I read several reviews that noted the software that comes with the drive doesn't always work. I wasn't worried as I know where I can find many drive cloning applications for free download. As it happens, my software did not work, after three hours of pretending to clone, the progress bar on the software was stuck on 0% complete. I downloaded a software package from EASEUS and it worked fine to clone my hard drive to the new SSD. The new drive and the system is now much faster and I have an extra 1 TB external hard drive to use on top of it. Don't expect the software to work, and if it does, consider it a bonus. The non-working software is the only reason I only gave it 4 stars.

I used this to clone an old SATA drive to a new SSD drive. It was very easy to use and worked great. I like it so much that I went out and bought another SSD and did the same thing with another laptop. So I have switched 2 old SATA drives to new SSD drives with the same kit. I plan on using it on 2 desk top computers soon. In addition, when I am done with all the upgrades, I can use this kit with one of the old drives as an external drive for extra storage. Bonus.

I got this to fix my old Gateway 10' Netbook that had a dying OS Hard Drive. After copying the provided cloning software to a thumb drive from its CD-Rom, and hooking up the new drive in the enclosure, I was able to get the drive cloning working with ease. Less than 5 min of setup to begin the cloning. Was able to clone a 250 HDD to a new 480 GB SSD in under an hour.

Overall, this was a pretty good purchase, it is fairly simple to set up, and does not require extensive knowledge of how to work on computers to setup. The software package is the only thing I would say is kind of a nuisance to use, but it is definitely functional. Of additional note, I am very pleased with the fact that after you remove your old hard drive, you can still use it as an external hard drive with the provided kit.

I was adding a larger drive to my Laptop. Put old drive in this enclosed and transfer user account and data to the new drive. I now have a nice place to store files that don't need to be accessed all the time. This is one of the best build and easies to use hard drive enclosures I have ever had.

I needed to swap the slow HD on a new computer with a better SSD but the computer doesn't have an optical drive to do a clean install on the new SSD. So it was get this product or an external optical drive. I decided to get this and had no problems swapping the drives. The unit has a slide out tray that you attach your drive to using four screws through the bottom of the tray. Everything seems solid and high quality. The software was extremely easy to use and available off of their website to download for free if you don't have an optical drive to install the supplied transfer software. I now use this as an external drive with a 1TB drive I had to store and access media files and programs that don't need the increased performance of an SSD drive.

Great product. Quality parts and cabeling. The instructions didn’t work for my MacBook Pro. There was something wrong with the way my drives were labeled, or something. Had to take my machine to a Professional Data recovery Business to do the data migration, really expensive. The Box and sled for the external drive is high quality and solid. Only a usb 2.0 machine so I couldn’t take advantage of the capabilities of the kit. The data recovery specialist said that I needed a second computer to be able to do the migration. My HD had only 500 MB (Yes MB) available so there wasn’t enough room to clone my 250G HD.

I purchased this item so I could use a spare Sata III Drive and I turned it into a bootable Grub4DOS hard drive that I can boot from ISO images stored within specific folders. The base is solid and it is well worth the money spent. I replaced the Antec usb drive that broke due to poor construction of the lid. Besides this product from Apricorn I also have the mSata case as well which I use to test mSata drives at work. I will say if you want to use this a portable drive besides the main purpose of the case for migration purposes, this will hold up to the abuse.

I purchased this kit to replace a defective drive in my daughter's laptop so that I could dump data from the bad drive to the new one before I replaced it. I ended up putting a second new drive in the case from the kit and use it now as a backup drive enclosure. It was a very well made item and was easy to use. It was a quality, economical item that I would recommend to anyone. I saw no cons with this item.

I had a 120gb SSD installed in my desktop and had purchased a 480gb a while back, but was not sure how to transfer the data from one to the other. I saw this at Best Buy and figured 'why not try it'. I put the new drive in the Apricorn, plugged it into a USB 3.0, ran the software. It took about 10 minutes to transfer the data. Once I installed the 480, my computer booted right up and is working great.

This is the 3rd of these hard drive upgrade kits I have purchased. They all work great, truly all get 5 stars, but to look at them- sheesh! All the aesthetics of a city bus! Please let some industrial designers collaborate with your terrific engineers. For those who only care about performance I don't believe you will be let down or do any better, seriously.

Purchases this item to take an old high capacity drive that was removed from a laptop and make it into an external backup drive in my desktop. Directions were easy to follow and came together with no issues. Nor an old drive has a new life. I would recommend this solution to all who are needing and extra external drive.

This worked great for cloning my internal hard drive to the faster SSD drive. After using this to upgrade a couple of laptops, I store one of the huge internal disk-based hard drives as an external drive in the casing. I can always pop it out if I need to upgrade another computer hard drive.

I bought this to update the hard drive in my MacBook Pro. A little disappointed that there isn't a "native" Mac software app included with the package, however there are good instructions provided. After the drive clone & swap, this case makes for a great home for the old hard drive & a USB 3.0 external drive.

Device has been used on a number of platforms to help with hard drive upgrades, failure recovery, and large data backup projects. USB 3.0 speed has been useful to speed up the project. Included software has failed on a few hard drive duplication projects. Had better success with both Western Digital and Seagate provided software with this device.

The instructions were very clear and I was able to transfer my data from my old hard drive on the laptop with no problems at all, not even a single OS related issue! Can't beat that, and now I have a spare hard drive if needed as the housing and old hard drive can be used as an external drive.

I used this to upgrade a Mac hard drive with an ssd drive. It was easy to use the enclosure. The backing up process is built in to the Mac which made things easier although a little confusing if you're not familiar with Macs. After the swap, everything booted up fine and just worked.

I bought two of these at a premium price because their metal enclosure suggested better quality and product literature touted Mac compatibility. My original goal was to plug into the USB port on a NetGear 3400 WiFi router to use for Time Machine backup on the newly released 13" Retina MacBook Pro. Before opening the packaging, I researched what I could on the Apricorn and Best Buy websites, but found no negatives. Mechanical installation was a snap. I had an Apple OEM 2.5" hard drive leftover from upgrading a different Mac laptop to an SSD. I put the drive into the drive tray, seated the SATA & power connectors, tightened four screws, then slid the drive tray into the enclosure. I didn't need to download any drivers to read files on the hard drive. I connected the drive to my MacBook Pro using the included USB cable. It worked right away in Mac OS X Mavericks and after a brief delay for driver install in Windows 7 (I use Parallels with a Windows virtual machine). Even better, I didn't need to provide external power, as the USB port supplied enough juice. The CD included with the enclosure did not run in either Windows 7 or Mac OS X Mavericks. And although I downloaded a copy that did run from the Apricorn website, I ended up not needing its functionality. Next, I tried connecting the drive to the USB 2.0 port of the NetGear 3400. NetGear claimed their router supported connection to a number of different USB hard drives, but Apricorn wasn't on the list. I wasn't able to see any files on the hard drive when it was connected to the NetGear, either when using Mac or Windows. Following a suggestion in a NetGear forum, I tried reformatting the hard drive with NTFS partition. It didn't help. Nor did looking for files using either web browser or network explorer features. In the end, I abandoned my goal of using Time Machine backup over WiFi. Neither could I connect the Apricorn as a network drive using the USB port on the WiFi router--but a Western Digital drive connected through that port nicely. At the end of the day, I have a non-networkable USB 3.0 drive that works great when connected directly to the MacBook Pro. Since the enclosure didn't include any shock mounts, I wouldn't trust a mechanical hard drive to survive daily transportation in a backpack. So the Apricorn is useful only for files (like movies) that aren't needed on a daily basis. With hindsight, I should have bought either an SSD in an external enclosure or one of the Airport WiFi routers that includes a hard drive. They would have cost more, but they also would have worked. And if I insisted on buying an external enclosure, I should have bought one from a Mac-centric manufacturer.
