For the money this phone cannot be beat. I'm a selfish person, and never spend a lot on phones. First time Windows user, and very easy to setup. Gmail was easy to activate, as well as my contacts. Cortana is flawless, and works great with my cars Bluetooth. While driving, (handsfree) is very important. Cortana will say: you received a text from__, do you want to reply? Simply say yes, and your response. Cortana will read back response and ask permission to send.
Internet Explorer is very fast with my wifi. While on the road I never have any problem with my 4G. The call quality is very good in suburban NJ, no dropped calls either. The speaker is very loud too. Microsoft has the apps that I need for basic use. I use HERE Drive for GPS, paired with Cortana. This works awesome, and very accurate. This does have a notifier when you are speeding that pings. Another must have app is CamScanner. This will enable you to take a picture of a document, and edit if needed. You can then email, and choose what type of document to send(pdf, jpeg, etc). A very handy app to have in my opinion.
The screen clarity is great at 5 inches. Watching YouTube and browsing is very good. For the normal person, this phone will serve its purposes. **I did unlock this device and setup with T-Mobile. It took about 3 days for unlock code, easy to setup. I have been an Android user for many years. The Windows experience has been an enjoyable one so far.

Dear iPhone users...

As a long time iPhone (and Android) user I can tell you that for 99% of the people out there this Lumia 640 is ALL YOU'LL EVER NEED. And that it's actually a really amazing phone! And even more amazing when you consider the crazy low price!
With new iPhones selling for $649, there is something to be said for a phone that costs less than 1/10th that price, yet runs super smooth, has a very nice screen, amazing sound, great build quality, solid camera, GPS, an SD card slot, LONG battery life, etc.
So WHY is this phone less than 1/10th the cost of an iPhone? Simple. It runs Windows. (Keep reading...) Windows is an awful phone OS right? That's why nobody has it right? WRONG! Windows is a phenomenal phone OS! In fact, in the opinion of many it is the BEST phone OS! 9 out of 10 people have a Windows PC. You use that and are comfortable with it, right? Then you will feel right at home with this phone. If you have a Windows PC it makes almost NO SENSE to get an iPhone or an Android phone and have to learn something completely different than what you're already used to. For Windows users Windows phones like this Lumia 640 make complete sense right out of the box!
The "problem" with Windows on phones has been Apps (specifically, lack of apps). While there are now some big name apps (Facebook, Netflix, Crossy Road, etc.) there are still apps that are missing... But IT DOESN'T MATTER and here's why:
It's been my experience that the majority of people (most, not all) that buy an iPhone do so because either they don't know what else to get, where to get it, how much to pay, they heard it was the best, their friend has one, etc. But when they get their expensive iPhone they don't even install apps but rather use it just for email and websites and taking pictures and texting and maps and you can do ALL OF THOSE SAME THINGS easily on this Lumia 640 at a tiny fraction of the price.
Put another way, your entire family AND your in-laws on BOTH sides could all have brand new Lumia 640's for LESS than the price of one single iPhone. Something to think about it.
It's a shame people don't realize just how great these phones are.
P.S. Yes it can be unlocked, and yes it will run on your choice of AT&T, Cricket Wireless, or T-Mobile (and possibly others). It's GSM LTE so no Sprint or Verizon on this model.

***At the time of writing this review, price is $49.99***
As an hardcore android user, liking an Windows Phone is difficult! But this WP v8.1 running windows phone is really really impressive, specially at this price point! Allow me to enlighten you:
0. Performance: You need to use this phone to believe that, how a inexpensive phone can run soo smooth.
1. Perfect form factor: The phone is not small, not big, I would say perfect. Very comfortable to use. No complaints about that.
2. Display: 5 stars. One the best, bright & vivid display on a smart phone. There is no slider to adjust brightness. Only 3 settings toggles: "Low, Medium & High". I mostly keep it on 'Medium', sometimes on 'Low', but never on 'High'! [You can set those 3 levels on settings menu] Because its too bright :P. Very very good color production. I'd say about the level of AMOLED panels. And, you can also tweak display colors!
3. Battery Life: 6 out of 5 stars. You do not have to worry about battery life, trust me! My settings are like this: GPS, Wifi, Mobile Data on 24/7. And I always get more than a day easily with moderate to high usage! It is because, lack of higher resolution, proximity sensor & aided by the OS itself.
4. Camera: 8MP back camera quality is too good for a sub $50 phone! You can compare it with the camera of iPhone 4 (I think this camera is batter than iPhone 4 camera, if you don't believe me, use it. You can always return if you don't like), I'm SERIOUS! It is that good! Front camera is good too,
5. Call quality: Excellent.
6. Removable back cover: Means, you can always swap a new color for real cheap price & get a new look! Those covers are sturdy & good looking.
7. Expandable storage: Supports upto 128GB of micro SD card! You can move apps to SD card & free the phone memory too!
8. OS: Windows Phone 8.1 is GREAT. Its fluid, smooth & a pleasure to use. All the mainstream apps are available, except those google apps. But third party apps are there too full-fill those gaps.
9. Capabilities:
-HERE Maps & Navigation: The best offline & free maps & navigation service from Nokia. This app is unbeatable. You can use this phone as a GPS Navigatior!!! Which is much more smarter than a Garmin or Tomtom device! Yes, you can use it as a sub $50 GPS device!
-Health & Fitness by MSN: An excellent fitness tracker, steps counter & much more! A very very good fitness app. I couldn't find a better or more reliable fitness app on android!
-Windows Phone 10 preview: Yes, you can install & experience the new WP 10 Preview on this phone! Its officially supported & will be upgraded to WP 10!
-Camera: Really great! 8MP can capture some very detailed photos! There are some 'Scanner' apps on store, you install one of those (eg. Handy Scanner) & use it as a document scanner!
-Multimedia device: Even if you don't use this as a phone, you can use it as a MP3 player or a very good video player!
-FM Radio: Which is a very rare thing this days, in a smartphone! & it works perfect!
Conclusion: Can you suggest me a device which can play music, movies, browse web, which can be used as an offline (without internet) navigation device & on top of that, can make phone calls! And all these under $50??? Answer is very simple & short: NO. If I use other android phone as my daily driver, I use this phone as a GPS navigator! It works sooo good & the long lasting battery is always a plus!
In the end, I highly recommend this phone as a daily driver or as a secondary phone or as GPS Navigation device or as a multimedia device (like an iPod!) :-).

I got the phone when it was on sale for $30. It was supposed to be locked to At&T but it actually works with any carrier that uses At&T network. It has a really big screen if you like that but you will have troubles fitting it into your pocket. The display is beautiful and the touch sensitivity is good. Overall, very good quality for that price.

This version is way better than its predecessor, the 635. You get a lot of screen real estate for the price. the resolution makes this phone feel like a premium android or iPhone, but for only a fraction of the price. The speaker is loud and call quality is clear. Camera quality is better than a lot of phones at this price. The one con about it is the selection of apps, which is an issue for WPs in general. But if you're crafty enough, the web browser can resolve many of those issues. Compared to higher end smartphones, this device offers a lot for a fraction of the price. For the more frugal buyers, the price is generally good, but will go sale every now and then.

I don't want to get screwed into paying $800 for a phone, and I don't believe in year-long commitments to mobile phone companies, so I used a Lumia 520 all last year. For $50, it did the job, but I was a bit annoyed at its slowness and the small size of the screen.
At $80, still with no contract, the 640 fixes the problem. It's as big and beautiful as any iPhone or high-end Samsung, the pictures are fine, the live tiles are great. It's better looking than any of the other major operating systems with the live tiles and as easy to operate. The only downside, which you probably already know, is that there are not as many apps available for Windows Phone and the apps that are available often don't seem to work as well. Still, I recommend this phone to anyone--you save $700 with nearly all of the functionality of an iPhone or a Galaxy, you can cheaply expand the memory with a card, and you can upgrade every year. I suspect Microsoft is selling these phones at a loss--otherwise I simply can't understand how they do it--but I urge everyone to take them up on it.

I'm a tech savvy engineer with a slight gadget addiction. I have a small fleet of Apple, Android and Windows devices. I say this to emphasize that I didn't choose this phone lightly. In my part of the world AT&T had good service, buy if you don't own your phone you pay more per month on your service. So this phone, with a buy outright price a fraction of the Apple and Samsung equivalent, is a great deal.
As long as you don't mind the Windows phone operating system, which I personally really enjoy, the features for price are outstanding. It takes away the stress of having a delicate $600 piece of technology in your pocket every where you go. I can replace this phone for less than the deductible in most insurance plans and still get all the functionality of the more expensive phones. I'm sold and can't recommend it enough.

Quality phone for a bargain price.
Pros:
--well made, slim elegant design.
--nice hi-res screen, oleo-phobic gorilla glass is practically smudge free and silky smooth.
--good processor and graphics speed.
--expandable memory
--good battery life.
--quad band, should work overseas. and if you unlock it (easy and free) should work with overseas sim cards ( haven't tried it yet).
--excellent GPS reception.
--windows 8.1 UI is intuitive and handles all functions well. upgradeable to win 10.
--price!
Cons:
--fewer apps than iphone or android.
--compass slightly erratic, maps that use the compass to orient the map north will oscillate slightly even when phone is not moving. (Most electronic compasses are inferior to the good-ole mechanical type anyway.)

Got the phone at a great deal of $29.99 during black friday. There is no another phone in the world like this which is so much feature rich.
I currently use LG G4 but has this phone as a backup phone which I use as a media player and also use as GPS. ( Free Here Maps).
1. NFC
2. FM radio (No data streaming required)
3. Decent CAMERA - both front and back
4. Built in flash- for pictures and use as a flashlight also
5. Very good Battery Life
6. Perfect 5 inch screen size- larger than Iphone 6 screen.
7. Amazing price
8. Windows Phone 10 upgrade eligible
CONS:
1. Not all the Apps available in Play Store and App store are available for Windows phone but if you are a general user..it should be sufficient

I've had Android and iPhones in the past and was looking for a new phone. I never had a windows phone and was curious this time around. I took advantage of the Black Friday price of $29 and all I had to do is insert my sim card and everything is working. I am excited to learn a new mobile OS. The Android and IOS phones have some similarities but the Windows OS is really different, it's all new to me but not challenging. It comes with Windows 8.1 but soon Windows 10 will be available to upgrade to for free. Since it was not a contract phone I can always move to another phone or go back to my previous phone (Samsung S4) by just moving the sim card back. If you look at the specs, it's doesn't seem too impressive but the phone is quite responsive, way faster than my S4. I am happy with Windows OS but the only drawback is i'm also looking for a smartwatch but not many are fully compatible with Windows. If that's what you're looking for, stick with Android. Once I get used to it, I might be shopping for a newer more powerful model like the 950 but it's not like I need it, the 640 works just fine as is. If you're curious about Windows Mobile, you can't go wrong with this one, no commitment if you don't like it. Even without the black Friday price ($59), it's a steal.

This phone is a excellent value. It is fast, when using apps, the screen is a nice size 5 inches. While resolution/picture is not as beautiful as I-phone or Samsung Galaxy phone it's clear and usable. Reception and sound seem to be on par with my previous Samsung Galaxy phone. Remember it's less than $50 rather than 400 or 500 dollars. I think it could be a good phone for people tired of android and apple phones. (It is a model that is slated to be upgraded to Windows 10 mobility coming out this month.) The con for this phone like all Windows phones is that there aren't anywhere near as many apps for the phone. If you are like me, a person that doesn't need that many apps then that's not a big issue. It's an ATT phone but I'm using it on T-Mobile with no problems after I unlocked it. If I lose it or break it so what---heck it cost me less than what many people spend on a case for their phone. BTW it comes with a free copy of Windows Office included!!!!

I picked up two of these for my son and my father-in-law. I can't say enough about this phone. It's a great value, period. I'm a pretty avid Windows phone user, and I can say this phone does just about anything a casual user would need. I upgraded it to Windows 10 Mobile. It can run all of the apps I've tried in the Windows Store, no problem. It's got Cortana. One of the best mobile browsers you'll ever use. A pretty great camera. A big, clear display. The built-in speaker is surprisingly loud. It's a cheap phone but nothing about this phone feels cheap or lacking. Makes a great media device for kids, an offline GPS for the car, or just a spare music player for the gym. Buy a couple of them!
