Since I bought this printer it has been working well for me. It connects wirelessly and end product is superb. The only problem I have with it is that at times, it is a struggle to get my MacBook Pro to connect to the printer wirelessly whereas my devices like iPhone and iPad connect easily. I am still trying to figure out what could be the problem. Apart from that, it does precisely what it supposed to do.

I read somewher online that this laser printer was very good for pictures... better then others. I kept looking for samples online of pictures and I found just a few and it did seem pretty good. Attached here is an uncompressed printout I did with this Canon on laser gloss paper. results were very satisfactory. Does a nice job copying, scanning and faxing. Although I have only fax once so far.

This printer can handle large documents and prints them fast. The only down fall is that it’s extremely noisy.

I was dreading getting a printer clunky slow expensive toners but due to covid19 and working from home I had no other alternative. It was the more affordable a little on the larger side but works great via wifi. I have it on a small night stand that matches my decor.

MF Scan Utilities crash and will connect w luck

MF Scan Utilities will crash when scan again after not using for a while (few days) and will never connect again until reboot the PC and the whole printer. sometimes I needed to reboot two threes times or do something else (couple hours) come back to scan, the MF Scan Utilities would see the scanner again. The exact error message is "ScanGear MF" - "Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off." I could print from PC even getting this message that prove the connection was there. Basically, you have to play with luck to get the Utilities see the scanner again. I got this problem when the printer/scanner was out of the box (after first scan). I re-installed drivers couple times, downloaded the latest version 1.10.0.0 vs the 1.9.0.0 that came with the CD. I like my old Brother Printer/Scanner it never had problem.

It is not a friendly user. Every time I send it to the printer, I need to go to the printer to select which tray of paper to be the pick. It is always disconnected from the wifi connection.

NICE PRINTER (VERY FIRST IMPRESSION)

**Disclaimer - We've only had this printer for a week, thus I can only explain the pre-purchase thought process along with initial printer setup. I'll update this in the future with whatever good or bad news I have to add.
Once I decided to replace our old Epson inkjet printer with a color laser I figured THAT decision alone was the biggest mental hurdle to overcome - until I started researching and comparing color laser printers (trying to find the best choice / best price was tough). One example:
Printer "A" says it supports mobile printing from a phone or tablet but doesn't actually say "Air Print", while,
Printer "B" claims the same but adds "via our printer app"
Both required digging/searching the mfg. website(s) for verification (This is a big deal for us because we've bought Wi-Fi printers previously that were a pain-in-the butt to print from an iPhone/Pad using a mfg. App and wanted to avoid having those same issues after buying an expensive printer. The purchase price was also important, and unless it's a major Holiday or similar sales event (Black Friday) try an hold off from buying one so you can save $100 (or more).
Toner cost is/was not a huge selling point for us. We've always had a printer in the house for personal use and depending on what we had going on it was possible we wouldn't need to print more than 0-10 pages per month. Low printing volume was always an issue with inkjet printers, having the nozzles bugger up & causing wasted ink & paper running the mfg. head/nozzle cleaning utilities. I don't for see looking for replacement ink for at least another year. What did matter was whether or not it was possible to print something if only one cartridge was out of ink/toner, and according to Canon support it will still print (with varying quality). So a $10 +/- price difference between mfg branded toner wasn't enough to sway us either way when deciding what to buy.
Main "wants":
1. Laser Printer
2. Color (not monochrome)
3. Document scanner (via feeder AND flatbed)
4. Wi-fi
5. Air Print
6. Duplex printing
7. Reasonable sales price
This model has everything we wanted and after comparing brands and reading a lot of reviews (here and elsewhere on the web), we pulled the trigger and bought this printer.
From-the-box-to-first-print:
This is a heavy printer (60+ lbs) and this weight was the only issue I had while deciding what printer to buy. Several competitors had models that weighed less than 50lbs. but did not meet other expectations. Once again - it's HEAVY, so make sure you have a strong cabinet/desk to place it. We lugged the box over to the printer stand and began the unwrapping. The whole process was super smooth, taking only about 5-10 minutes from start to finish. Everything was preinstalled (toner / rollers / tray / etc.) so all I had to do was pull all the packing tape off/in the printer, plug it in, and turn the power ON.
Wireless setup was a breeze. I configured it via the control panel and had it printing through our home network in under 10 minutes. Printing via an Apple device was seamless, as was setting the printer up on our Win10 computers. I sometimes scan old radio magazine / catalog’s so I was interested to see how easy it was to use the flatbed scanner function. It worked great. I scanned from the printer directly to my PC and it created a folder under Documents and stored the scans there.
There you have it (for now). I’m staring this off with a 4-star review and will update it “down the road” after we’ve used it for 6 months or so.

Worst product ever. Won’t connect. I smashed it on the ground because it was no longer returnable. Troubleshooting this thing was a regular routine. It got worst over time. Save some headaches. Do not buy it. Look at the picture. Do I need to say more?

I never write reviews but I’m concerned this excellent printer is going to get a bad reputation because of Canon’s poor setup guide. I followed Canon’s instructions and was so disappointed in the print quality, I nearly returned it to the store. I thought perhaps AirPrint was the cause of the quality issue so I installed Canon’s UFR II driver on my Mac and reinstalled the printer using the new driver, with no improvement.
I came across a guide written by another MF743Cdw owner on Canon’s support forum that fixed the print quality. They recommended these three steps:
Clean Fixing Assembly -
Go to the Home Screen > Menu > Adjustment/Maintenance > Maintenance > Clean Fixing Assembly > Select ‘OK’ > Then, Select ’Start’ (in the lower righthand corner of the Printer Display, and let it do its thing).
Correct Print Color Mismatch -
Next, go to the Home Screen > Menu > Adjust Image Quality > Correct Print Color Mismatch > Select ’Start’ (in the lower righthand corner of the Printer’s Display, and let it do its thing).
Auto Adjust Gradation - Full Adjust - (This is a more robust sequence than the initial Startup Color Adjustment when the printer was first turned ON.)
Go to the Home Screen > Menu > Adjust Image Quality > Auto Adjust Gradation > Full Adjust > Select ‘OK’ (it will list 4 Steps)…
Print Image 1 for adjustment.
Scan the printed Image 1 for adjustment.
Print Image 2 for adjustment.
Scan the printed Image 2 for adjust.
Select ’Start’ (in the lower righthand corner of the Printer’s Display, and follow the on screen instructions).
Afterward both b&w and color looked excellent, surpassing my old inkjet on the same paper. Hopefully this helps anyone else shocked by the poor out of the box print quality. Everything else, including scan quality, duplexing, and noise levels have been very good as well.
Also during my research I read that the fan inside the printer remains running even when the system is sleeping. Thankfully that’s not true, it’s completely silent while in sleep mode. I can’t find a reason to not fully recommend it!

The MF743Cdw was easy to set up and produces beautiful output. printer is fast and quiet. Printer is not small or light weight, but I love it. I have not yet bought new toner, but I expect cost per page to be reasonable.

Really liking this printer so far. It is big and heavy though.
Setup was easy and connecting to the network seamless.
All devices recognized the printer right away.
Scanning from PC was easy and so was faxing.
Printed out mixed color pages and they look good.
I'd recommend this printer for small business users.

Bought this for our church office. We no longer print "bulletins" and this works great for every day printing, copying and scanning. The print quality is not as good as a full size "professional" printer, but works great for our needs.

So Far So Good

Bought this for Home use rather than business. Replacing my third inkjet in 6 years, a Canon Pixma 922. Got tired of the not so great prints from tablets and phones. Wife's charity uses about 20 pages a day, quite a bit lower than this MF743cdw printer is geared up for. Overkill, but, spent the money anyway based on duplex print and single pass scan in color....and it was on sale at $150 off, with laser toner cartridges on sale as well as printer/toner bundle discount, and multi-toner cartridge bundle discount at Best Buy . So, $380 for the printer and $311 for the four cartridges.
Yep, Canon toner cartridges list for $109 each which is ridiculous. You don't necessarily need to buy the cartridges right away because this printer comes with Starter cartridges for cyan, yellow & magenta (1200 sheets) and a Standard cartridge for black (2400) sheets. There are third party cartridges out there, but you'll have to transfer the Canon chips and you'll never again know how many sheets are left in the count. There is also a third party refill company out there, but that requires drilling, cutting, filling, taping, and keeping the original cartridge with the original chip....pta.
From the beginning: This printer is heavy, like 60 pounds. I'm 5'9" at 165. But I was able to pick it up, put on a cart to my car and then lift it up a flight of stairs to the second-floor office...by myself. Use your legs not your back!
READ THE DIRECTIONS on the box. It shows how to get this out of the box within a box. I deadlifted this out of the box and again up onto my printer chest of drawers. You may need two people. Technically, OSHA says anything over 50 pounds is a two-person job. I took pictures of each step so I can repack this in case I have to return it. It's also got a huge footprint. Make sure you have plenty of room for it to perch including at least 10 inches space in the rear.
Before you hook up power READ THE DIRECTIONS on the Quick Start booklet contained in the box. I'm retired USAF, and always read and know the checklists BEFORE stepping into the cockpit or procedure. You should too for this printer. Easily connected to my WiFi, easily loaded software from the included CD and updated with drivers from Canon Support for MF741/743cdw printers on Win 10 64x.
BTW, I skipped the step for "Perform color correction" on the way to software load because I didn't understand how to do it. I did this after setup and after learning the steps using Canon support page and Google search. The color correction is done by the printer automatically. There are also settings available for each color saturation within the menu display on the printer. For now, my colors look great. Print focus and clarity are great. Saturation is just fine for my wife's use and mine.
Then I loaded the CD software and download update from Canon onto my wife's laptop without issue. Don't mess with the firmware yet. Remember, if it ain't broke, don't update firmware!
Next, I downloaded a Canon Printer App onto my Android phone and printed. The phone detected the printer and gave me duplex and color options at the top of the document. You can only get the print commands and options from a document (pdf, word, open office, etc.) to print not from the Canon Print app itself. My Android tablet worked as well. Printer can print from these Android mobile devices as long as your idevice can see the WiFi. Printer woke up without loss of IP address. This can be a problem for Mac or Apple items, but there is a fix you can search for on Amazon to make your printer IP address "static." Overall, I've had the best prints from phone or tablet ever....way better than inkjet from a phone app!
ONE ISSUE: Ran into a problem printing from my wife's Android tablet. Troubleshooting revealed that she was actually editing and printing from Google docs cloud. Will not work. You must download your doc to the tablet or "make available offline" in order to print to this MF743cdw on your own WiFi network. Printing from a separate cloud is an issue I've not resolved.
HAS SO MANY CAPABILITIES that I'll never use. But I have used the print, scan and copy functions and here to report that my first review was WRONG about scanning. Instead of using the default printer menu display to scan, you should first use the MF Scan Utility located on your PC after loading the included Canon CD drivers. From there you can change the default scan settings for Color, Black & White, Custom 1 and Custom 2 scans that exist on the printer display menu. Scan option dropdowns include one/two sided up to 600dpi output to JPEG, TIFF, or PDF, and clarity settings too. I setup each default with a different combination. Or you can scan remotely FROM your PC instead of trusting what you set for the printer menu. After changing scan preferences in MF Scan Utility, make sure your PC is shown available in the printer scan menu; you may have to restart your PC for the printer to recognize changes.
Copying was easy except you have to decipher the picture menus choices for one sided, two-sided, one side to two, and two side to one. Again, consult the manual or Canon support site or Google search.
You can print using USB thumb drive, USB cable, Ethernet cable, or your business network (if you have a smart IT guy). Also has a separate tray for envelop feeding...just pick the tray you want in printer properties. And you can buy additional stackable paper trays if you have the business need.
Again, so far so good. Printer is a success in the first few weeks. Time will tell. Thinking of buying the insurance just in case.
Pros: Works out of the Box. Keeps Wifi on wake up for Windows and Android. Crisp black and colors for home use letters and small graphics. Quiet during sleep.
Cons: Expensive toner. Large footprint, heavy. Reported Mac/Apple WiFi issues. Doesn't print from third party cloud as of yet. Noisy during wakeup and print.
