Pros Compact Light Runs off USB Power Duplex capable Good scanning quality Includes card scanner Automatic OCR M1 Mac Capable Cons Slow Lackluster OCR Scans always skewed from paper and cards Rollers are tight requiring pressure to detect pages Rollers grab page skewed even when manually guided Often grabs entire stack instead of single page Antiquated micro-USB connection No mobile app or mobile capability Disconnects and closes app each time the computer sleeps App doesn’t automatically launch with scan button on newer OSes Design The ImageFormula R10 uses a very common design for sheet feed portable scanners with the outer shell unfolding to become the sheet feed tray. Wings hidden in the cover extend the tray even further. On the tray are two paper guides that can be unfolded to help guide the paper and hold it up. The paper path is nearly straight with only a slight curve as it passes through from the sheet feeder to the output slot. The entire paper path is accessible via a single locking latch. On the right front of the output slot is a card scanning slot that passes straight through the body to the back allow scanning of even rigid cards. There is a single button used to start scanning. For those concerned about security there is a Kensington slot around back. However, the slot doesn’t appear to have the metal backing in the hole to strengthen the connection. Scanning is only done through a PC or Mac via USB. In an odd choice, the connection is micro-USB where most modern laptops have transitioned to USB-C. This likely means you will need a dongle to connect and scanning via tablet or phone is, unfortunately, out of the question. Setup and Performance Hardware setup is straightforward if you have a legacy USB-A port available. Just open the outer door of the R10 and plug in the USB cable. Assuming your USB port provides enough power, the scanner turns on and is ready to go. Scanning software is available via a rather unique method. Instead of downloading software from a website or installing from an app store, the R10 has built in storage which stores a copy of the scanning software. It does have the advantage of not needing to be installed. The downside is it depends on the system auto opening the folder to show you the file. Due to security concerns, many modern systems no longer show you this option and can lead to some initial confusion for the less tech savvy. A potential downside for some is settings are the same regardless of what computer you plug it into. While not a deal breaker, its worth knowing before buying if this matters to you. The good thing about this technique is that you always have the software with the scanner, and it updates the software when you update the scanner. A recent updated added official support for M1 macs so if you want to carry a dongle you can now use the R10 with the latest Macs. Out of the box, the R10 scanning software has three scanning profiles of Text, Photo, and Full auto which are already have the most common settings best for each configured. You can edit the default scanning profiles to suite your needs or create extra scanning profiles. Default storage locations of Desktop and the Photos folder are included and of course you can create further custom locations. Scanning can be initiated via the scan button the scanner or the one in the software. Scanning isn’t particularly fast. Often regardless of paper weight it was not detected nor grabbed by the feed mechanism often requiring a little extra pressure on the pages to start the process. If you have thinner paper, such as carbon copies it can be tricky to feed as the system often doesn’t detect the paper. Also, regardless of the condition of the paper it tended to grab the entire stack of paper while trying to grab the first. This also lead to resorting to scanning pages one at a time. While this might be specific to this unit, every piece of paper or card scanned, no matter how straight it was inserted, always ended up feeding through slightly skewed. It also seems like the rollers on one side where either moving at a different speed or slipping. The software does attempt to straighten pages, but even on the most aggressive setting pages were regularly crooked as well as skewed. You could see this best on pages with horizontal lines. The lines would be parallel at the top and angle if they were near the bottom. While some scans were very subtle, it always seemed to be present. Getting a clean scan often required several tries but once you got one the quality was very good. While scanning in you have the option to add extra pages or adjust scanned pages, such as brightness, contrast, and rotation. Strangely, if you rotate a page after other adjustments, it reverts all other changes. The straighten tool has no option to straighten based off a line and only includes a slider making precise adjustments tedious. Strangely absent is any sort of a cropping tool. If you choose to output to a pdf, you have the option to run OCR on the text of the scan. This can come in handy if you want to grab some text off the scan afterwards. While poor quality printing or odd fonts can easily throw off OCR software, the OCR with R10 was a mixed bag with regular text. Sometimes it could grab nearly perfect text on colored paper with noise and a Times New Roman font yet other time struggle to recognize any more than 50% of the text on a clean scan on white paper using Courier. Final Thoughts The ImageFormula R10 is a mixed bag. Overall, the design language feels dated for the most part. If you are looking for a modern scanner with advanced features like smart straightening and de-skew, mobile support, cloud support, and modern ports this scanner is not for you. That doesn’t mean it can’t be useful for some. If prefer the older design and image quality is what matters most to you, the ImageFormula R10 could work for you. Otherwise, it might be best to look at other more modern solutions.

Verdict: I wasn’t expecting much from this portable scanner frankly, but we needed a small scanning capability for business trips. This little wonder has exceeded all our expectations. It scans quickly, with duplex, from an auto-feeder, and produces excellent quality PDFs. It also has a dedicated ID card / business card scanner. Simply put, the Cannon R10 portable scanner is awesome! Initial impressions. It is small, but not light. It comes with one Micro-USB to USB connector. This is unfortunate since most new devices come with USB-C. MacBooks don’t even have USB connectors anymore. Setup. I don’t think I have previously used hardware connected to my computer without having to first install drivers. Somehow, the scanner doesn’t require any installation of programs or drivers to work. I plugged it into my Windows PC, a folder immediately opened, I double clicked the OnTouch icon, and the scanning app loaded immediately. Then, I loaded a piece of paper and pressed scanned on the computer, and it worked! So total setup was 45 seconds at most, and this was for a first-time setup! I wanted to also try this scanner with my MacBook, but I need to order a cable that connects Micro-USB to USB-C. So unfortunately, I can’t confirm how smooth installation is on a Mac. Scanning performance. This little jewel scans fast and well. It does duplex automatically. And it has a business card / ID card scanner. The app interface on the computer is simple, intuitive, and works well. The feeder can accommodate about 20 pages, and can adjust to different size paper. This scanner will travel with us on business trips as we have to scan lots of original documents from clients. While the scanner can scan up to 600 dpi, for our use, the standard setting is all we need, and this will get us about 12 scanned pages per minute, which is ample for our workflow. I have used the auto-feeder a few times already with 10+ documents each time, and it has performed flawlessly so far. Things I like: - Compact design - Business card scanner - Requires no installation; it just works! - Fast duplex scanning - Dedicated business card / ID card scanner - It turns on as soon as it unfolds Things I don’t like: - Micro-USB connector on the scanner, and included Micro-USB to USB cable… Micro-USB is not forward thinking. Also, I will have to buy a Micro-USB to USB-C cable to use with my MacBook. - I wish it came with a travel pouch or case, since this is intended to be a portable scanner. Overall, I am thrilled about this scanner. I absolutely love it. It’s strange to be so excited about a single-use device, but for us it fills a perfect niche: being able to capture original documents on the go, without adding to our travel footprint. I highly recommend this Cannon scanner for a portable capability, and also as a dedicated home scanner that can easily be stored away

If you are reading this review, it is highly likely that you have a need to scan documents on the go. This could be because you work with documents on the go – such as a notary, a real estate agent, a paralegal, a genealogist doing research, a nomad living on the go, etc. The great news is that you may have found that gem of a scanner that you are looking for. This review will be done in multiple parts – Key Specifications, Usage Impressions, Pros, and Cons. The key specifications for this RGB LED-based scanner are as follows: • Paper Handling: 2” – 8.5” wide and 2.8” – 14” Long paper with a weight of 17-34 lb. Bond – which should cover the vast majority of folks' scanning needs. • The Sheet feeder can hold up to 20 pages. • Scans are 8-bit greyscale and 24-bit color but can scan in Color, Grayscale, and Black and White. • The optical resolution is 600 dpi and output resolutions are 150/200/300/400/600 DPI. • The scanner weighs 2.2 lbs. and is 1.57” x 11.2” x 3.75” in size with the trays closed. • Built-in CaptureOn Touch Lite scanning software (it’s on and runs from the device) • Single-Pass duplex scanning with skew correction • Card Slot This portable scanner is quite impressive in use. Once connected to your laptop and opened the on-board software folder opens and allows one to run the CaptureOn Touch Lite scanning software. The software has plenty of features despite being considered a lite version. One of the best features is the skew correction that can help to straighten a page that was scanned crooked. In the software, you can select the document type, color options, output formats, and simplex, duplex, or auto-detection for the number of sides to copy amongst other settings. The software is automatically updated when Canon sends out updates for it. A second outstanding feature on this device is the card slot – this slot allows one to quickly scan business cards and plastic cards, such as a driver's license, easily. While the product documentation states that it is not intended for scanning photographs on photo paper/photographic media we were able to scan a picture during testing. Since this is a portable scanner there is not an output tray – thus you must capture the sheets or have the unit on a large enough surface to capture the documents as they are scanned. This is just a fact and not really a con. Pros: Size, one-pass duplex scanning, card slot, power consumption Cons: None noted during testing.

The Canon ImageFORMULA R10 is a perfect scanner for light everyday use. It is a single pass, double sided sheet scanner, that clocks in at roughly 12 pages per minute black and white and 6 pages per minute for color at 150 dots per inch, but can reach a maximum resolution of 600 dots per inch (native). So, let me tell you a story because I'm not completely unfamiliar with this type of scanner. We have Canon high end desktop scanners that I use at work regularly, and I use a Fujitsu 9 lb portable scanner for my work in the field. But, none of the scanners I use so far are as light or as flexible and with ease of use as this canon R-10 scanner. It weighs a mere 2.2 pounds, it's powered by USB and has built-in software, and for the vast majority of us end users, the scanner is perfect for our everyday use. I can take the scanner with me to work, I could take the scanner with me to conferences, and easily move around the house. The effective use of the scanner in everyday use is far greater than any of the other machines I have used currently or in the past. The scanner features unique things like a double sided business card scanner on the front, a 20 sheet variable sized auto feeder that has the ability to do scans of receipts or contracts on the go, and the ability to take from one place to another with relative ease. While the specs state that the scanner's design is for paper use only (about max 34 lb bond paper), I find that it is quite Adept at scanning photographs, and to that it's nice that the output options include TIFF files by default. This would allow for advanced photo corrections should you need to make adjustments to your scans at a later time The last few months I have been trying to scan decades of photographs and slides into the digital world. Thus far, my workflow has been loading it on my flatbed scanner on the network and then scanning them manually one by one on my desktop. It's time consuming and frustrating that the existing scanner would not scan the photos via the automatic document feeder. The reason for this is most document feeders rotate the document 180 degrees to scan the file and photographs are too small and get stuck. This canon scanner is a straight feed, with minimal bending of the document (kinda like the Fujitsu or Canon scanners at work). I was able to set this scanner up on my dining table, load up the photos and scan photos while catching up with my favorite shows. In terms of convenience, this scanner rocks. So how does it scan? Well the 150 dpi (the lowest setting) is fast, doing roughly on spec 12 pages double sided in black and white, but it slows down rather significantly to 6 pages for full color double sided scans at the same resolution. Scanning at 600 dpi (dots per inch) full resolution would put this scanner at roughly 1 page per minute. If you are not scanning at those resolutions all the time, then this is perfect. For text archival 200 dpi is plenty, 300 dpi for photos. The scans by default are a bit darker, you may have to increase the brightness of the scans after a few test runs. The software that accompanies the scanner is very easy to use. While by default, it does not have an ‘advanced’ mode, but adding additional scanner presets is rather easy, as well as changing output formats and where they are stored. The way I see it, the only big flaw to this scanner is that there is no output feed tray (to hold documents coming out the other end), and there is no way to clear jams easily. That said, at least one can be solved rather easily, removing jams, I need to look more into the manual to see how to do that. My final take on this, if your workflow / lifestyle requires you to keep digital copies, this scanner will do the trick. For me this will be traveling with me and I can see it notching up quite a bit of air miles in the coming year as part of my carry on luggage.

This is by far the simplest and easiest scanner I’ve ever used! Ok, first off I have to start out with just how pleased I am that a product has just one job, and does that one job very well! This scanner has a small footprint, but packs a punch with its seamless performance. As far as size, the r10 (while folded closed) is smaller than a box of lasagna pasta sheets, and quite light. The compact design makes this extremely easy to transport for anyone on the go. Not only is it perfectly mobile, but there is only a single cord to connect. No battery pack, brick, or separate power cord at all. This thing simply connects via USB to your laptop, and boom, you’re set! The initial setup process was extremely easy. Once connected to my laptop, the software and updated automatically popped up. I use macOS and expected there to be some sort of hang up with having to choose a proper setup selection. But, to my surprise I was not met with any choices, simply the setup screen, a few clicks of “ok” and within 5 minutes the scanner software was updated, scanning application loaded, and scanner ready for use. The Capture OnTouch application is absolutely straightforward and simple to use. There’s not much with regards to “options” or extra features. You’re able to simply select the type of scan, the destination folder for the scan, and “scan”. How easy, right?!?! I decided to use a few bills and receipts for my initial scan. I loaded 5 pages of different sizes and clicked “scan”. After I selected my file destination, the pages began to slide down smoothly, swift and quietly. I had to actually ask “is it scanning or analyzing the pages?”. The answer was obvious just seconds later. The whisper quiet process was finished in seconds. Once the scan is complete, I’m greeted with a preview page of each document on the left side of the application, showing the front and back of each document (in color). I was actually in shock due to the ease of use. I would love to go into deeper details about features and extras, but there are none! Simply pick a folder, load the scanner, and scan, that’s it! Hands down, this is definitely a product I would recommend for ANYONE in need of a simple, no nonsense scanner.

The Canon imageFORMULA R10 Portable Document Scanner is a great tool for those of us on the go. It connects quickly, the scanning software is basic enough to be user friendly, but feature-filled enough to be incredibly useful. The great part of this scanner is the size and portability. While it won't fit in a laptop sleeve, it would certainly fit in a large size briefcase or (in my case) a laptop book bag. It uses a single USB-A wire (which was problematic for me, see below) to connect and power the scanner. The scans are clear, very high quality, and as you'll see in some of the pictures, the software does an excellent job "fixing" the rendering/the image when the scanner pulls documents in at an angle - something it does often -- but the software is exceptional at fixing it. Two small issues I ran in to - the device connects via a traditional USB-A wire. I work on one of two MacBook Pros on any given day (one 13" M1 and one 15.4" i7) and neither of them have USB-A inputs. So I had to use a conversion cable for this to work. My second issue is with the software - while it's great once it's up and running, installing it/launching it can be a bit of a nuisance. Every time you plug it in you have to re-run the installation which, luckily, is very fast. But - BEWARE - if you are a Mac user like me, you *MUST* eject it before closing the scanner lid and/or disconnecting the cable or you will get warning upon warning (see image). Overall, I would give this scanner a thumbs up. 4.5 stars with the strong potential to be 5 stars with some tweaks to the software and maybe offer a USB-C cord in the box?

I am extremely pleased with this portable scanner! Portable scanners have come along way over the years, and this is an example of one that is worth its price. For one, it yields incredibly crisp and high DPI images that really gather in the detail off pages, from both sides! Yes, this is a double-sided scanner, which is better than my 1-1/2 year old all in one printer can do with its ADF. For reference, I put the scanner next to my 2015 13” Apple MBP, and as you can see it has a very compact footprint that takes up next to no space, which makes it truly portable. It also has quite a bit more heft and robust structure to it than expected from initial looks, which makes me trust that much more that it can act as a portable scanner. I find it irritating reading reviews where people are expecting this scanner and others like it to perform like primary workstation scanners, when that is really not its designed use case. What I do find extremely impressive about this portable scanner is that they built in a card scanner that ACTUALLY WORKS. It scanned BOTH SIDES of my driver’s license in one go, and holy cow is that handy! I have had some janky experiences with even full-sized scanners in the past. The dedicated card slot senses the card automatically, and when you are in the Imageformula software it will automatically scan it and then you can save it into a folder with ease. I have my OneDrive folder setup on the Imageformula software so that I can simply scan and name each document and then it is automatically in the cloud! Overall, I am highly impressed with this portable scanner. It is ridiculously good and is worth its price. My only slight adjustment I would recommend to it in the future is the inclusion of an additional micro-USB to USB-C cable as that is the direction many devices are going and this included micro-USB to USB-A cable is not going to work for some computers, including the newer Macbooks without a dongle adapter. I also want to note that when I plugged it in the first time, I did have to follow prompts and go through a firmware update that took me to Canon’s website to download it and get it installed. It took about 10 minutes, but it was worth it to get this great portable scanner up and going! Thanks for reading and I hope this helps your purchasing decision.

There are a variety of scanners today from all in one printers, to smartphone apps, to single use scanners as is this, but for me personally this product has definitely set itself apart from others I have used. Firstly, upon opening up the scanner I was amazed at truly how small and compact it was. Though it was small it did not feel cheap or flimsy. Upon fully opening it up it was extremely easy to get running as it was just a simple usb cable that plugged into my computer as no power cable was even needed! The greatest aspect though was that there was not software or drivers that had to be installed as upon selecting the application it popped right up and I was ready to begin scanning. The scanning experience was great as the double sided and color scanning was a nice benefit as I had predominantly been using a smartphone app previously. The adjustable guides were also a nice touch as well since I do find myself scanning receipts and some abnormally sized documents. The ability to scan both sides of a document at the same time was great as figuring out which way a double sided document needed flipped was always a hassle with other printers/scanners. The software utilized upon scanning the documents was extremely user friendly as it was not too advanced to the point where it was difficult to do the basics, but also had the ability to perform more advanced features. Predominantly the ability to correct a document that was skewed when scanned was very convenient to avoid rescanning documents. Overall, this is a great compact and portable scanner that hits all the boxes. The portability, build quality, ease of setup/use, and dual sided and color scanning abilities are what really set this apart. The only slight negatives would be the lack of a usb-c connection cable and speed of the scanner, but the second of those is definitely a trade off of not requiring a power cable to which I will gladly accept this instead of having to worry about a power cable. With that said though this is definitely a product I would recommend to those that need something a little more than simply a phone app for scanning purposes as this is definitely the sweet spot between portability and inclusion of scanning features.

I purchased this scanner to use at work. I plugged it in and it automatically connected; after 1 hour of use it disconnected and would not connect back until I tried to use it the next day. Its not reliable. I tried to scan a wrinkled document and it would not scan. I have to return for one that is more reliable because I work in a fast paced environment.

A portable scanner is something that you often have to make sacrifices with, because the portability means it either doesn't scan well, lacks features, or does not feed documents cleanly. Not the case, though, with the Canon ImageFORMULA R10. TLDR; Slightly larger and heavier than some portable scanners, but it has a feeder tray, runs the software on the device instead of the computer (nothing to install on the computer), has easy to use software, a slot to scan business cards and guides accommodating a full sheet of paper down to a tiny receipt, and even does well with photos! Worth the slightly higher cost! This scanner has a couple of features that make it a must-have if you truly need a portable scanner. 1. Nothing to install. The scanner runs its software from the device, so you don't have to install anything onto the computer. This means that you can easily use it on a job site, then take it to the office, then take it home, then take it to a family member's home, and every time you can just plug it in and start scanning. Works on Windows and Mac. 2. Runs on very little power, meaning you edon't need to plug it in. it will run directly from the device's USB port.* 3. It can duplex scan, meaning it will scan both sides of the page at the same time. * NOTE: I recently moved from Windows to Mac. I have a 2020 MacBook Pro that does not have USB A ports. I do have a dock that plugs into the side of the laptop, using two Thunderbolt ports, but the scanner would not power on with this dock. I was able to use it with my M1 Mac Mini, but I have a powered dock connected to that device. This scanner has several useful features on the device, including fully adjustable guides that can accommodate a full 8.5x11 piece of paper, down to a receipt from the gas pump. It even has a separate slot to scan business cards! The scanner does include two rubber pads on the bottom to prevent the device from sliding on the table/desk/other surface, but they are not that resistive, so sitting on my dining room table with the tablecloth on it did nothing to prevent the scanner from sliding easily. However, the best feature about this portable scanner compared to others is the document feed tray. Many portable scanners require you to feed the documents into a slot, and getting them to detect the document is often difficult. Having a tray makes this SO much easier even if you are only dealing with a couple of pages at a time. This does make the Canon ImageFORMULA R10 a little larger and definitely a little heavier than other portable scanners, meaning it's not something you can throw into your backpack and not notice. Depending on the use case, this may be a worthy tradeoff. It even makes this a good scanner for a lightly used area of your home, such as on a small desk with a computer that is only occasionally used. The software is surprisingly easy to use, something I have not always found Canon to be very good at on some of its products. The scan process is divided into 3 sections: 1. Select document - select one of the 3 default settings of text, auto, or photo, which is a collection of settings in each button that apply to the specified type of document. You can also create your own, and these settings are stored on the device so they will pop up the next time you plug it int. 2. Select Output - this section allows you to specify where on the computer you want to save the document. There are a couple of defaults, but you can also specify very specific folders and save them as an button (option) for next time. 3. Scan - just that - scan the document. Once the scan is complete, you are presented with a window to review the scan. You can make a couple of changes, including removing pages and changing the output type (PDF, JPG, PNG, etc), and even the file name. You can also add additional documents to this job before saving it, good if you do have a larger batch or forgot to include a page or two. This scanner does have the ability to ignore blank pages. I did not find that it did a very good job of this, though, especially if the batch had a mix of single-sided and double-sided documents. However, it's easy to delete the blank page in the preview before saving. I tested several documents with the default configurations, favoring the auto option so that I could see how well the scanner detected the document, which it did very well. As to be expected, this is a portable scanner, and it's running on USB power, so scanning is a bit slower than you might experience on an all-in-one printer, and certainly a desktop scanner I clocked it at just shy of 7 seconds a page. Not fast, but this is not a scanner for large batches of documents, so certainly good enough for minimal scanning. I also tried scanning photos, and it did a fantastic job considering the portable factor! It also presented me the option to make some adjustments to the photo before saving, including basic color correcting, black-and-white or grayscale, and rotating. The Canon ImageFORMULA R10 is a little more expensive that some portable scanners, but is worth the extra cost for the ease of use and impressive features it has. If the extra weight and slightly larger size is not an issue, this is a fantastic choice for a portable scanner!

If you need a good quality portable scanner, the Canon ImageFormula R10 Portable Document Scanner may be exactly what you need. It is portable, connects easily to your computer, and easy to operate. Everything you need to get going is contained in the box. The scanner folds neatly into a 11-inch by 4-inch by 2-inch volume. The only other accessory you need is the USB cable to plug into the computer. You just plug it up and it is ready to go. You don’t need any other batteries or power cords to get working. Once the scanner is hooked up to the computer, the drivers and software load. All you must do is open the scanning software from the popup file explorer, unfold the scanner, place your document in the scanner, and start scanning. It is quite easy. The scanner can do one-pass, double-sided scanning. The quality of scan is very good at that. The scanner also did a very good job of aligning the scans. I hate scanners that have text lines that aren’t straight. This scanner didn’t have a problem with that. Also, you can do color scanning with this scanner. Color scanning was a little more difficult. I had to go in and select the quality of the scan. I found the color scan color was as exact as I wanted. The reds tended to be a little redder which saturated the image slightly. I don’t mean to make it sound like it was bad. It is just not a perfect recreation of the original, so it is something to be aware of. However, I think in 99% of the cases, this will more than do the job it needs to do. The scanner is portable. You do not need batteries or power cords to make it work. However, the size may be an issue when considering something fully portable. As mentioned, it is nearly a foot long and 4 inches wide. You will need some extra space in the computer back to fit this scanner. Also, the scanner itself weighs a little over 2 pounds, so it will add some weight that you have to carry. But if you know which days you need it and which days you don’t, you can probably get by. In the end I really like this Canon ImageFormula R10 Portable document scanner. I recommend it to anyone in need of a good quality portable scanner. It is easy to use and produces good quality images.

Ok, for a portable scanner this thing is a beast in a good way. You can: - Do two sided scans in one pass. - Business card scanner built in, even handles really thick/rigid plastic business cards It folds out like a transformer and ends up looking like a desktop scanner with paper guide and supports. The only thing missing is a place to catch the documents after scanning. A few odd choices came with the scanner: - The software shows up as a mount point in Windows. Depending on version of Windows, the button on the scanner can automagically open the app. The button does not work with Windows 11 and my virus scanner. - I have not been able to get it to work with Chrome OS without using a wine emulator. The software is either Windows or Mac download. - Updating the software will overwrite what is on the mount from the scanner. Worried a glitch may take away the software. As a side note to the positive, nice to not have to download something on every machine you connect it to. Personally I would like to see the software be external or installable. Maybe even have a browser plugin to allow Chrome OS to work with it. Native Linux support would be nice as well. But a browser based app would allow cross platform regardless of the OS. I did have an issue with the scanner where it was initially hard to get the paper to feed into the scanner. The software reported that there was no document to scan. That only happened initially, but seems to have worked itself out. One other design issue I have noticed, the card scanner will jam if anything is behind the scanner, like the USB cord running to my laptop from the scanner. Overall this is a fantastic scanner once you get by some small details and figure out how to work around them. Chrome/Linux OS support would be a nice addition. I would even be happy with a hack or maybe a web based app of some sort. The images are fantastic though. And that is the most important part of a scanner...

The Canon imageFORMULA R10 Portable Document Scanner is a good portable scanner for use on the road, office, or around the house for small scanning tasks. It is corded so you will need to have your computer nearby when scanning. It comes with scanning software to help manage the quality of the scan, color scale, and the expected scanning options, but it is not the Canon Pro software which I have in the past to help organize and manage the scanned images. It does scan fairly quickly on low dpi settings, about 7 seconds per page. If you adjust for higher dpi scans, it will take longer. It handles double-sided single page scanning very well. The big question with portable scanners is always the feed, and I found it to be fairly average. It can get finicky with multiple pages, especially if scanning double-sided documents. There are paper guides that makes scanning easier for smaller documents, like receipts. The quality of the scans were very nice, just what you'd expect from a Canon device. Overall, this is a good portable scanner especially for smaller jobs, but expect multiple page scans to be a bit more complicated.

The Canon image formula R10 portable document scanner allows you to take the Canon quality desktop scanners that you may be used to in your office and take them on the road with you. You can easily convert documents into digital files such as PDF's so that you can reduce the amount of paper you are carrying around. The scanner connects to your computer via USB and there is no software required to download since the software is already on the scanner. This compact scanner has the ability to do duplex scanning in either color or black and white. It also has a card slot so that you can easily scan business cards. Once you scan your document the built in software allows you to edit the document or image. The scanner worked well with both my mac mini and my windows 10 laptop due to the fact that you don't have to download software. For those of you who have laptops with only USB c ports you will need a powered USB hub in order to use this scanner. I love that I don't have to give up so much real-estate on my desk to an old flatbed scanner as now I have the ability to put away my scanner when I don't need to use it. This scanner is a great addition to any home or office as it can be used by anyone from kids to adults without much difficulty. It is also a great addition if you have many client meetings outside the office so that you can scan documents directly to your computer.

Scanning documents is not something that I need very often, but when I do, I want it to be easy and as trouble-free as possible. My first foray into scanning at home was on the various “all in one” printers I’ve owned over the years. These can handle printing, copying and scanning, and do a very good job. They’re great for scanning photographs, or for the occasional one-off document where you don’t mind lifting the cover to lay the document on the glass. I still think this is the best way to go when quality is what matters most, but they’re not very convenient when you have a lot of pages to scan, and manually flipping pages to scan both sides is just a pain. Buying a dedicated scanner seemed like overkill, so when small, portable scanners began to appear, I was intrigued. I picked up an ultra portable model, and that’s great for when I need to carry a scanner with me in my computer bag, but again it fell short whenever I had to scan lengthy documents. Feeding the pages one by one would take forever for a long document. Enter the Canon R10. This is an update of an earlier model, but it’s my first experience with a Canon scanner that wasn’t part of a printer. I didn’t have super high hopes, but I did hope it would be better than a single-sheet scanner. Out of the box, the R10 looks nice and feels solid. It’s a glossy white plastic and is very compact. It is powered by the USB port on your computer, so there’s not a separate power brick, which is a good thing, especially if you’re taking the scanner on the road with you. Setup is simple, and the first thing I noticed was that I didn’t have to install any software or drivers. I love this! The software is in a protected memory area in the scanner itself, so it’s always ready to go no matter which computer it’s plugged into. As much as I love this, I do recognize that I’ll be out of luck if there is ever a Windows update that obsoletes the scanner software. For now, though, it’s great. To turn on the scanner, simply open and unfold the cover. Doing this creates a document holder that is complete with paper guides—very nice! Here’s where I did find one glitch, but it’s a fairly minor one. Canon says that the software “launcher” should automatically open when you power on the scanner. I have two computers, one with a USB-A port and one that only has USB-C ports. On the one without a USB-A port, I had to use a powered hub. The scanner powered up, but the software did not start. Canon recommends connecting directly via USB-A, but that wasn’t an option for me, so I decided to go hunting for the software. Fortunately it wasn’t difficult to find the folder. It shows up as an external drive in Windows, so I just started the software myself. On my second computer, I thought things might go more smoothly since I have a USB-A port on that one, and Canon indicated that the launcher should work when connected directly. On that one, I could plug into the USB-A port directly, but the software launcher didn’t start automatically there, either. Canon seems to be relying on Windows to identify a removable drive and utilize the auto-play settings. Since I have auto-play turned off, this didn’t work for me. It would have been nice for Canon to explain this, but it wasn’t hard to figure out. The software itself is a little basic, but does a good job of managing your scans and allowing control over a wide range of settings. You can essentially define profiles for often-scanned file types, and this is nice, although not immediately obvious. You can make choices for color or black & white, dot pitch density, and a host of other options. Nice touches include the ability to correct a skewed document and straighten it out, as well as duplex scanning. I must say I was pretty impressed with the duplex option. The scanner simply scans both sides of the document at once. This was a breath of fresh air to someone used to manual duplex options that are slow and clunky. Once you’ve previewed the scan, click finish to save it in your designated folder with the name you gave it. Loading and scanning a document is pretty easy and worked well for the different documents that I’ve tried so far. Another thing I love is that it can handle up to a 20-page document automatically! For me, this brings office-level scanning to the home office, and is worth the price of admission. I haven’t tried to do anything too complex, but it easily handled a multi-page duplex document with color. You can save the final scan to several different file formats, including pdf. Scanning speed is very respectable at lower resolutions, but slows down the higher you go. There is a dedicated card scanning slot, and this is great for scanning hard plastic cards such as drivers licenses, and it automatically scans the front and back. You can also use this for business cards, but it will jam if the card is too flimsy. Just something to keep in mind. Overall, I am thrilled with the R10 scanner. It has handled everything I’ve thrown at it, and it will replace my previous portable scanner. I’m a big fan of the scanner apps that you can use on your phone, but for scanning a multi-page duplex document, this scanner beats that option hands down. For the occasional one page document your phone will work just fine, but if you scan a lot of documents, this is a great option that won’t break the bank nor will it take up a lot of space. You can’t connect it to your phone or tablet, so you’ll need a computer to use it, and it doesn’t save to SD cards. It would be great if it could do that and allow you to scan without any sort of computer, but that isn’t supported by the R10. That’s not surprising at this price point, so I don’t mind. Although it may lack a few bells and whistles found on competing scanners, the R10 comes at a better price, smaller size and lighter weight than many of those competitors. I think it’s a winner!

The Canon Image Formula R10 Scanner is light and compact. The straight feed of various sized documents went off with out a problem. The scanner has full duplex scanning. There is a slot on the front for business card scanning. The Canon Image Formula R10 Scanner was a breeze to set up. First it Took me to the web site for an update. Following the onscreen prompts, the scanner was ready for first use with-in 15 minutes. The portability of this scanner makes it a must have if you are moving about a lot and need to scan on different computers. The software is installed in the scanner, and it launches when plugged it. “As long as you have auto play turned on.” I have used this scanner for 3 days without any problems. The document feeder holds 20 sheets of paper and has pop up guides to align the paper. If your on the go and need a scanner to go with you this is it. Just over 2 pounds it doesn't take up too much room either. I would recommend this scanner to family and friends.

Soooo easy to use. I have a Mac Mini. Plugged the scanner into it, and the software to perform the scanning showed up automatically. After a quick set up process, I was able to scan a boatload of receipts and store them in my Google Drive. You can create destination folders to make it easier to choose where each scanned file goes. I chose PDF as my file typed. Some of the pages I ran through it ended going through crooked, which I thought would end up being a problem. But its not, the software has an automatic adjustment that straightens the pages. Scanning was quick and easy. I did have to make sure to push the pages down into the scanner a couple of times, as they did not automatically feed. But within 10 minutes I had the stack of papers and receipts I was needing to scan completed. You can name each scan prior to performing the actual scan itself. The R10 is super compact, taking up little space on my computer desk, which is always appreciated. It also shuts off when you close the lid, so it's not just on all the time. All in all, highly recommended.

There is really nothing I don't like about this scanner. It is very easy to use and does a great job at scanning in documents. It is plug and play, meaning you simply plug it in and open it up to turn it on. It automatically opens up a file folder with an owners manual and software in the folder. The manual is a link to a browser with all of the instructions. The other file is a software that allows you to select what folder you want the documents to go to and you can name the document. You load the paper and select 'scan' in the software and it passes the document through one and it scans both sides of the paper. When you are finished, you simply close the lid of the scanner and it shuts off. This scanner doesn't even require batteries or a power supply. The USB powers the document. The documents are very clear as well. So far I have no complaints and highly recommend it!

I'm familiar with this scanner and this brand. It never lets me down. I have used some of the other brands and this scanner is right there with it. It does a great job in a small package. I would say if your existing printer does not scan or you just need a seperate scanner then this is a great option. Especially for the home office. The software is incredibly easy to use and the quality is great. Canon is known for making great portable products in the printer and scanner product lines. The only thing I was shocked was that a new product would have this type of USB connection, the smaller USB that could be found in older cell phones from 10 years ago. The construction otherwise is great and very sturdy. If you need a great scanner on a budget, or simple to use, or for a small office then this is the way to go.
