Customers praise the Streaming 4K Ultra HD Hi-Res Audio with Dolby Vision 7.1 Channel DVD/CD/3D Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-Ray Player for its exceptional picture quality, support for Dolby Vision and 4K Ultra HD resolution, and reasonable price point. While some users find the remote control to be small and the streaming function limited, the overall consensus is that this Blu-Ray player offers excellent value for money and enhances the movie-watching experience.

Way better than the Sony UBP-ux80 that it replaces. Both picture and sound is clear. Only using a high end sound bar for this setup, but I’m guess would need at least 5.1 surround to fully utilize

Piece of junk! This player didn't even last 7 months before I started having problems! Man I miss Oppo!!! After 7 months of use, my UB820-K player is showing massive amounts of artifacts, locking up, and then no sound while trying to watch movies. The weird part is it will play the first 15 mins of the movie just fine and then it starts acting up.
After Oppo quit making 4k players we are now left with overhyped junk from the likes of Panasonic. I purchased this UB820-k to get my feet wet with the brand, so glad I didn't jump in head first with the UB9000. Buyer beware.

I went into this with a healthy dose of skepticism, $500 is a lot to spend on a blu ray player after all but I have to say it's proceeded to exceed my expectations
I've had 2 LG UBK90s that i had to return due to drive problems, but they also had eh image quality, inconsistent hdr10 output, poor up conversion, a cheap remote and frequent glitches and issues that made me go enough is enough
I also have a quite nice Sony x800 but it does not support dolby vision, which I cared about a lot on my LG C8 OLED
So that brought me around to the Panasonic, it supports all the major hdr formats including the upcoming hdr10+ meaning you'll be covered no matter what TV you have. Compared to the other players this one exhibits a level of refinement that they couldn't match. Playback and disc loading is very quick (practically instant actually) and it automatically switches format based on what disc type you put in.
But the star of the show is its automatic tone mapping feature which tailors the hdr10 output to the TV you own, you select between 4 presets (projector, oled and 2 for lcds) and it does the rest. There's also a handy button on the remote that let's you tweak it at any time while watching a movie if say a scene is too dark or you are watching in a bright room. In my experience it's made a huge difference in image quality over its predecessors on hdr10 content. Dolby vision disc's look beautiful as expected. Normal blu rays get excellent up conversion without artifacts and can look shockingly sharp and detailed.
It also has a very nice front panel display, a great overlay for information on the disc you're playing back and extensive very customizable menu system that let's you tweak every possible thing to your hearts content.
The downsides? At this price I feel a back lit remote would have been nice, honestly the remote is a big let down and while I got used to it I find it uncomfortable to hold in the hand and a few buttons are a bit too close together for my liking. Also don't expect it to handle streaming apps. They're very slow and clunky though to be fair if you have the money for this then getting a roku or Apple TV (or even using your TVs built in apps) shouldn't be that big of a deal.
If you're even considering it then I'd say get it, it's the best uhd player on the market and you won't be disappointed

I paid $424.98 for a Brand New unit and Best Buy sent me an open box refurbished unit, which they sell for $204.99. Ripping me off of over $200. Would not expect fraud from a major company like this. I will be contacting Best Buy and if that fails the Attorney General of Minnesota, their headquarters home state. Not cool, Best Buy.

Best DV UHD player on the market

I love what this player is capable of putting on my TV screen. When I first bought my Sony a80j two years ago, I didn't have any way to view 4k content other than streaming. Coming from a 2014 model Samsung that was only 1080p and no HDR, the new Sony looked downright incredible. Then I started becoming more interested in physical media again, and decided to add on to my existing bluray collection with some 4k uhd blurays. I decided on this player instead of using my ps5 because I can't fit my ps5 into my media console, so the lights on it are distracting while watching films. Also for dolby vision and a better processor for upscaling old blurays and dvds. What a good decision I feel like that was. While streaming looks okay, watching 4k uhd blurays is like putting a fresh coat of wax on a clean car. It adds that extra layer of depth and clarity, and details are precise and don't skip a beat. Not to mention how much better the audio quality is, which is truly a game changer. If you have the display and audio gear to really maximize what this player is capable of, it is totally worth the cost. If dolby vision isn't necessary, the up420 model would be just fine for you. Unfortunately, didn't hear too many good things about the comparable sony models (freezing, etc) so IMHO the panasonic is the way to go in 2024, even though it's a several year old model.

I upgraded from a very capable Sony X700, I wasnt expecting much of a difference in picture, this was mainly for sound. I watched Ready player one on the X700 quite a few times so Im familiar with the visuals and audio of it. When I turned on the race scene for the 1st key on the Panasonic, my jaw, and heart both dropped!
The colors were so vibrant, the lighting effects were so visible and apparent, the edges were so clean and defined, and the Dolby Vision was like nothing I have ever seen before. The sound had a solid body like I havent heard before, it was defiantly front and center and demanded you attention. The bass was thick and powerful, the mids were perfectly audible, and the highs were balanced. I saw and heard things I havent before, and this Panasonic made me fall in love with the movie all over again. It brought colors and details out on my OLED that I didnt think was possible. This player just gets better, I put on Wreak it Ralph on Blu-Ray for my son. If I didnt know any better I would have thought it was a 4k bluray with HDR! It just looked so bright and vibrant, and the 4k upscaller did a beautiful job. I then tried another blu-ray, Christmas story, it did wonders, it took 30 years of that movie! This is by far the best 4k bluray player on the market, Panasonic's UB-9000 is $1,000 but it is meant or serious audiophiles with serious setups. The UB-820 and UB-9000 both share the same graphics capabilities, and sound is the same quality. The UB-9000 gives you alot more high quality analog outputs which the majority of us with a home theater wont us because we HDMI for all our audio. Trust me, if you have a great home theater setup, this player will complete it for years to come, and you will not regret this purchase.

so luxurious and beautiful image quality! sheer perfection! This player seemed so expensive to use for dvd's and blurays and 4k blurays since there are so many cheaper options out there. even my x-box series x plays 4k blurays and also is a top of the line gaming system at the same price. It seemed like a rip off, but now that I've purchased it I am relieved at how amazing it is!!! I have an LG 4K OLED tv and this makes everything look so much better than when I stream a movie!! I also have a lot of old dvd's and I am always skeptical of upscaling technology. If you've ever used a samsung tv you know what I'm talking about. But this thing upscales my old crappy dvd's so well it looks like it could be a bluray or even 4k bluray! It blew me away and looks so color accurate and amazing!!!! I use the seperate audio out function as well for crisp amazing 7.2 sound. It is insane how good this thing makes movies sound! The 'smart' functions need a lot of work, it almost looks like i'm using an old windows version 3.1 computer, but once you get used to the awful graphic user interface you realize the apps act just the same as they do on any other smart device, normally i'd just keep streaming over my xbox since the GUI is so good on that, but the video and sound quality when you stream over this device it's so much better that I can't go back to using the xbox. I highly recommend this machine!!!

Great 4K blu-ray player

This is an excellent choice for a 4K blu-ray player. It puts out a great picture and really nice sound. The upscaling of 1080p blu-rays is really impressive - better than I've seen on other players. Dolby Vision is handled automatically (unlike Sony) and looks great.
A minor downside is the remote - not particularly elegant considering the quality of the player. In particular, I dislike accidentally hitting the Netflix button, which is right next to the 'up' navigation button, causing it to leave the disc I'm watching and go to the streaming app.
If it's within your budget, I think it's a very good choice for a 4K player.

A major upgrade from the Sony x800. 4K blu ray discs load quickly and the presentation is next level. I was amazed with the difference in clarity and motion, along with the sound quality making this one amazing package. Streaming options are limited, however I use an Apple TV for that. If you’re into physical media, this is the ideal player to get.

As an avid home theater enthusiast, I’ve always sought the pinnacle of audio-visual equipment to enhance my viewing and listening experience. The Panasonic DP-UB820-K Blu-Ray Player has been a symphony of technology that harmonizes perfectly with my setup.
Visual Performance: The 4K Ultra HD playback is nothing short of a visual masterpiece. The colors are vibrant, the contrasts deep, and the clarity is so lifelike it feels like I can reach out and touch the characters on screen. The support for Dolby Vision ensures that I’m experiencing movies just as the director intended, with every detail meticulously presented1.
Audio Excellence: But it’s the high-resolution audio that truly sets this player apart for me. As someone who can discern the subtlest nuances in sound, the 7.1 channel output connected to my home audio system is a revelation. The player supports a wide range of audio formats, and the soundstage is expansive, with each note and whisper rendered in crystal clear definition1.
Build and Connectivity: The build quality is robust, with a sleek black finish that looks elegant in my entertainment center. The Wi-Fi connectivity is reliable, streaming content without a hitch, and the twin HDMI outputs ensure that audio and video signals are transmitted without interference1.
User Experience: Navigating the interface is intuitive, and I appreciate the smart capabilities that allow me to access my favorite streaming services directly from the player. It’s a seamless experience from start to finish, whether I’m watching the latest 4K movie release or indulging in a classic CD from my collection1.
Daily Enjoyment: Every day, I look forward to the immersive experience this Blu-Ray player provides. It’s not just about watching a movie or listening to music; it’s about being enveloped in a sensory experience that transports me away from the mundane.
Final Thoughts: The Panasonic DP-UB820-K is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality. It’s a cornerstone of my home theater system, and I can’t imagine my daily routine without the exceptional entertainment it provides.
Recommendation: Unreservedly Yes For those who appreciate the finer details in their audio-visual experiences, the Panasonic DP-UB820-K Blu-Ray Player is a must-have. It’s an investment in quality that pays dividends every time you press play.

After giving up on 2 Sony 4K players (2019 models) after repeated freezing problems while watching movies on disk, I bought this Panasonic for a fair amount more money, but I just wanted something that actually worked as claimed. This Panasonic works like a champ. Not one freeze in several movies. The picture is bright and sharp. Dolby Vision is beautiful. Colors just pop. Aquaman was amazing in Dolby Vision on this player. Sound quality is great. Offers hi-res audio. I do downgrade it for the remote and operating system. The remote is just OK at best. I do find myself pressing the wrong button fairly often due to it's poor layout. The operating system is ugly and awkward. You'll find it's limited selection of apps under "Network Services", which is not intuitive at all. This is one area that Panasonic could learn something from the competition. The device is not as compact as some other brands. Case is plastic, not metal. Having said all that, I'm very happy with this purchase. The most important thing to me is picture and sound quality. And on those points, I give this 5 stars.

Excellent 4K player! Picture quality is vibrant and this is the right player for dedicated movie watchers.
Only complaints are: 1. The remote that came with the player has an annoying Netflix button above the main navigation buttons that was too easy to accidentally push, interrupting whatever you’re trying to watch. We replaced it with a different Panasonic remote. 2. setting up subtitles while playing a disc is kind of confusing, so we’ve found it’s easiest to set up subtitles from home menus.

I've had this 4k bluray player for over a year now and I could not help but still gush over its performance..upscaling, compatibility with all major formats, especially Dolby Vision and HDR10+..what else could you want? And for the price below 500.00 it's the player to beat in its price range and dare, I say it...more. If you're a film aficionado, there's no better player that could play your DVD, Blurays and 4kBlurays with aplomb. Dolby Vision? Superb. Non DV HDR10+ discs only? Why settle for a player that could only default to bland HDR10 when you can have HDR10+? None, I reapeat, NONE in market can equal this player in price and performance.

Great video and audio processing, lame remote

As many of the professional reviews already state, this 4K UHD player has very good video (and audio) processing with a plethora of professional-level calibration settings. I have it hooked up to a JVC 4K pixel-shifting projector and it looks fantastic with 4K content - slightly better than a cheaper Sony UHD player (that I hated) that it replaced. A few gripes, though - the marketplace for streaming apps is very limited and very clunky. The remote control is mediocre at best and it's the only IR remote control that I've ever used that has challenges working with the IR repeater in my theater room - but I have the same issue with a high end universal remote trying to send commands to this unit (the same universal remote works great with all of my other components). So beyond the lacking marketplace (e.g., lacks Vudu!) and the odd infrared signaling (works fine if the unit is in the same room, but horrible going through a repeater), this is a great unit. If you're a videophile looking for a unit in this price point, it's a must-have. If you don't care about the last 5% of video processing performance and calibration options, it might be overkill, although my experience with a cheaper Sony UHD player was very frustrating (the Sony player often froze on movies even after downloading the latest firmware, wireless network did not work, HDMI-ARC issues that prevented me from using a separate HDMI hookup to my projector, etc.). Anyway, if the money's not an option, you plan to stream using a different device (Roku, AppleTV, Shield, etc.), and you don't need to use an IR repeater to send commands to the player in another room, I would highly recommend this unit - but if any of these caveats apply to you, these are some things to consider, but I'm still keeping the unit.

Main Unit Fine, Remote Almost Unusable
Posted .

This 4k UHD Blu-ray player is fine except for the layout of the remote control. It absolutely defies one-handed operation. The layout places the most common keys back over the middle of your hand and the thumb can not bend in that direction. The solution is to hold the remote so close to the butt end that it is uncomfortable and easy to drop. Or use two hands. To heck with that! This seems like a petty complaint, but this is flat out the most uncomfortable remote I can remember ever using. It's bad enough that I am focusing my review on it.
I imagine I will get used to holding this remote but, right now, it makes me upset.

I’ve used the first generation Sony UBP-X800 for about four years and been content with the performance. I have been looking at this model recently since it has HDR10+ and DolbyVision unlike the Sony. A price drop and open box deal made me pull the trigger. I had no idea what I was missing.
The 4K video looks much more natural. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 always looked fake to me on the Sony, but the Panasonic looks more lifelike. Other movies have more natural skin tones and colors pop without being too much. Upscaling from 1080P is also a strength of this player. I only have Mad Max: Fury Road in 1080P and it looks amazing when upscaled by the UB820.
Audio really surprised me on this model. I really thought my 7.1 surround sound system would sound the same hooked to any player. That is not the case. Sound is more dynamic and even louder on the UB820. I usually kept the volume between 60 and 65 with the Sony but that would tick off the neighbors now. Anything over 55 is too much.
I highly recommend UB820 if you have a nice TV and surround sound system. I was worried I would be spending money and barely perceiving a difference, but my surround sound system is at a new level.
A few tips if you buy one:
- Connect the unit to the internet and download the latest firmware before doing anything else.
- Do some internet research on the proper settings for you system to make sure you’re getting the most from the unit.
- Make sure you have a quality hdmi cable capable of 4K.
