Great SSD for a gaming PC. Higher speeds aren't necessary unless if you plan on doing a lot of data transfering. Will update this review if any issues.

--- SETUP ---
Quick and easy setup on an original PS5 with a disc drive. Screwdriver required for removal of PS5 cover.
--- FEATURES ---
2TBs of storage, SSD type drive, 6300 megabytes per second of write speed, compatible with PCs, laptops and PS5.
--- EXPECTATIONS and PERFORMANCE ---
I’ve been wanting an internal SSD for my PS5 for a while. Along comes the 990 EVO plus SSD! The installation was quick and easy after watching a quick tutorial on YouTube. The tutorial was more for me to learn how to remove the PS5 side panels rather than how to install the SSD. Installing the SSD into the PS5 is pretty straight forward. The SSD only fits one way and you can feel it fit in properly once you install it. A screw found inside the PS5 will secure it for you.
Once you turn on your PS5, it automatically identifies that you have added memory to your console. It will prompt and warn you that the SSD requires reformatting and that anything that might have been previously saved will be deleted. Since it’s new out of the box, I formatted the SSD and it worked flawlessly and quickly. I tried several of the games I already had installed. I transferred them over to the 2TB SSD. Though I didn’t notice any faster speeds, I also didn’t notice any slower speeds. Ultimately, what I wanted was more storage and that is what I got.
As far as heat sink goes, this 990 EVO Plus comes coated with “an efficiency boosting nickel coated controller that increases MB/s per Watt by 73%,” as per Samsung themselves. I haven’t noticed any issues as I game on my PS5, though I usually game in bursts of up to 3 hours.
--- APPROVAL ---
With this SSD being easy to install, I recommend this to any PC or PS5 gamer ready to expand their gaming capacity.

I added this to an open slot on my desktop motherboard and as expected I found the install to be easy and straight forward and used Windows Disk Management tool to create a simple volume to allow for use of the drive. This Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD has thus far met my expectations in terms of performance with no problems whatsoever.
I’m happy to have the added 2TB capacity that will come in handy for me for gaming and everyday tasks. File transfer rates are impressive with a maximum read speed of 7250 megabytes per second and maximum write speed of 6300 megabytes per second. Samsung notes this as 45% faster than the 990 EVO and a similar write speed to their PRO series. Those doing complex tasks especially should benefit from the vastly improved specs of this 990 EVO Plus as compared to 990 EVO. I appreciate that my gaming experience is improved with faster load times, smoother gameplay, and responsiveness. Everyday tasks such as movement of files is a quick operation with the 990 EVO Plus’s fast transfer rates.
This SSD is future proofed with the latest technology and Samsung has provided a five-year warranty in the unlikely event that problems should occur. Samsung’s Magician Software is available for firmware updates, extra encryption and monitoring of drive health. I see no real cons to this SSD and find it to be a nice balance of price and performance by a brand that I’ve found to be reliable.

Quick and easy PC or laptop storage upgrade
|

One of the best, and easiest, upgrades you can do to any PC or laptop is adding or swapping out the hard drive(s) and/or SSD(s) with whatever the latest technology is. And that’s why the latest Samsung 2TB EVO Plus SSD was immediately on my radar while starting to upgrade my most recent PC gaming rig. Specifically, in my case, I was looking to just add an additional SSD to my rig and double my storage and not use it to run my OS and other applications. After using my external SSD drive enclosure and Samsung’s Magician hardware, I was quickly able to initiate the drive and get it ready for installation. If you are looking to replace a drive, perhaps one with your OS on it, the free Magician software makes it very easy to clone that drive prior to installation.
After installing the new EVO Plus in my PC using the pre-existing SSD slot, I was ready to get started by loading a few PC games onto the drive and give it a whirl with some benchmark testing. I ran a few performance benchmarks on the drive and, long story short, it performed as expected and landed mostly in the middle of the pack alongside other SSDs at this price point. However, some comparisons had the new EVO Plus measuring below but very close to the Pro or EVO non-Plus versions including the quick system benchmarks. Overall, it’s honestly not something anyone would be able to notice if running load times side by side but it was worth noting. It is a hybrid drive meaning it can be used as a PCIe Gen 4.0 x 4 or swap it to a Gen 5.0 x 2 getting more bandwidth on a Gen 5 slot but leaving more lanes open speeding up your PC. It does claim read speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s however I was never able to get it up to that speed but pretty close which is typical for any drive with normal benchmark testing. And, the bottom line is you’ll probably never even have the ability or need for such speeds years from now until the rest of technology can catch up.
Some of the main reasons for selecting the new EVO Plus SSD versus other options was simply preference. I have had several Samsung SSDs in the past that I have used in my PCs, laptops and gaming consoles and have never had any issues with them like crashing, corrupted files or read/write lag. Perhaps one of the main reasons to consider the EVO Plus is because of the price point and ability to squeeze out more bang (or storage) for your buck as it is a little more moderately priced compared to PRO SSD versions.
Overall I believe the new Samsung EVO Plus SSD is a great options for anyone in the market for a quick and easy upgrade that will perform well under most circumstances including gaming, content creating, designing, etc.

When this Samsung 990 Evo Plus PCIe 4x4 5x2 M.2 2280 with 2TB capacity became available I certainly wanted to try it out. Especially as I was getting near capacity on my desktop boot 1TB WD SN850 Black PCIe 4 x 4 M.2 2280 drive. It doesn’t disappoint, but moving from the WD to the Samsung didn’t really provide much in the way of performance gains, which I expected.
I have external PCIe drive enclosures, so I dropped the Samsung into one of these to format as a GPT drive which left 1863GB for use. I then cloned the WD to the new Samsung using MiniTool Partition, which allows you to expand any of the existing partitions when moving to a larger drive. The C drive (partition) went from 83% use of 930.7GB to 42% of 1861.4GB. Then I just replaced WD with the Samsung in desktop and booted it up with no issues.
Make sure to download the Samsung Magician Software which allows for checking for updates, drive health, speed test, etc. There is Performance Optimization where you can select from Full Performance, Standard, Power Saving and Custom Modes. These probably would help if using a laptop to help extend battery life, but as mine is in desktop I choose Full Performance mode.
It is rated Maximum Read Speed 7250 megabytes per second and Maximum Write Speed 6300 megabytes per second. I got close to that as you can see from my CrystalDiskMark tests. It was a wash when compared to WD. But this Samsung is the same price I paid for WD 2 years ago and its twice the storage capacity with basically same performance.
TLC NAND flash memory
There are no lighting effects – which is fine for me.
No heatsink provided.
5-year limited warranty.
If you are looking for more capacity reasonably priced with nice performance this is worth a look, and I recommend it.

Introduction
I have used many Samsung products as a whole and for the most part have been very happy.
Going in
I already have a Samsung 990 PRO 2 TB in the past, so I was excited to see how much faster the 990 EVO plus would be.
What comes in the box?
Out of the box you get the SSD and an insert… nothing else.
Usage
The SSD is easy to install, but super fragile. This is the first SSD I got without a heatsink, so it looked like a stick of gum without the extra hardware.
Installing a SSD is super easy. The hardest part is opening the desktop or laptop to install it into.
To test the speed, I transferred 20 gigs of photos from an external HDD to the 990 Plus, and the write speed was averaging 112 MB/Second. The whole process took 3 minutes. I would say that’s pretty fast.
80 GB games from my game launcher downloaded onto the drive in about 13 minutes. Now I’m pretty sure it’s more dependent on the internet speed as well, but that’s the time that I got.
Games ran nice and smooth on the SSD. Games launched immediately on the SSD, and very little to no loading times in game. That’s a definite win.
I’m imaging that with a lot of use the SSD would heat up without a heatsink. This is still a head scratcher for me as to why they didn’t include in. It probably would have cost another $10-15 dollars to the MSRP for it to be included.
Minor issues
I wish this came with a heatsink. I’ve never used a SSD NVME that didn’t have one, so I ended up getting a thin one just in case.
Major issues
It really bugs me when I get a new SSD and my computer doesn’t recognize it automatically. I have to go into disk management and create a new volume every time. I had to do it with the 990 Pro, and now with the Plus. I wish manufacturers would create something that would allow for drives to be recognized without the extra work… or I’ve been doing it wrong all along.
Primarily for
This is a great SSD for anyone in the market looking for a nice 2TB primary or secondary drive. This would also be great for content creators who are constantly editing and transferring high volumes of files, photos, and videos.
Probably not for
People who don’t need the extra space or the speed.
All in all
I’ve always liked Samsung SSD’s. The EVO Plus is a great addition to an already great lineup of existing SSD’s. Do I think they’re a little overpriced? Yes, a little. If you want to best, you’ll have to pay the luxury price I guess.

Looking for 2TB of m.2 PCIe NVMe SSD that's fast and budget friendly? Look no further! The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is what you're looking for. Not only does it offer reasonable fast speeds in both PCIe Gen 4 & 5 m.2 slots, but Samsung also offers their spectacular software that allows you to monitor key metrics on the drive to ensure it operates at optimum performance for a long time! Samsung's EVO Plus series is also known for their stability and this drive is no different, it was able to survive a good battery of performance tests I put it through, including: read and write performance, heat testing in an external enclosure, day long gaming in a gaming PC (with and without a heat sink), all day gaming in a PS5 (I don't believe it's technically "supported" but it worked!), and being used for demanding video editing! It worked perfectly in all scenarios! I wasn't able to get the full read/write speeds in either Gen4x4 or Gen5x2, but it was close, very close. Maybe <5% max under during optimal testing.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this for a larger storage drive, game drive, or even a solid primary SSD for desktops & laptops. If you want to give this a try in your PS5 (regular or Pro) or possibly XBox Series X/S, try it out, but I don't know for sure if you'll have the same luck. As an external drive, you'll be losing most of the speed of this, so stick to using it as an upgrade for your internal storage. Highly recommend!!!

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus features up to 7,250 MB/s read speeds and 6,300 MB/s write speeds across a PCIe 4.0x4 or PCIe 5.0x2 system. I used the 2TB model and found that while these may be “peak” read/write speeds, in reality you will likely get less on average, but that really isn’t saying much since it is still blazingly fast. I initially tested the SSD in my PC before ultimately moving it to my PS5. I had to get a separate heatsink for the SSD before it could go in the PS5, which was easily attached and was installed in the system in just minutes.
On the PS5, I started by transferring just over 1.5 TB worth of games to the Samsung Evo 990 Plus from the internal PS5 SSD. I was getting read/write speeds in the mid 6000/5000+ MB/s range consistently, with a very quick transfer process end-to-end. I then went and loaded several PS5 first-party games like Ratchet & Clank & Demon Souls to test the SSD speed in-game with games that require fast speeds, and had no issues whatsoever in loading times, or hitches in games. Despite games like Ratchet & Clank doing high levels of read/writes from the SSD to memory in real-time, I didn’t notice any difference vs. the internal SSD in the PS5. When it came to game loading times, they were likewise extremely fast and did seem to be slightly faster than the internal PS5 SSD, particularly with older games.
In terms of heat, although for much of my time using the SSD I used an external heatsink, I personally noticed no issues when in my PC, or now in the PS5. Despite putting under it a pretty heavy upfront load, I did not see any throttling or signs of tension on the SSD. It has been absolutely blazing end-to-end, and shows no signs of slowing down. Samsung has killed it.

I think most people are always in need of more storage and I am not a fan of paying monthly for cloud storage. For me there are about 4 brands I trust to last. Samsung is usually at the top of my list. And right now with holiday prices. It was a great time to get some additional storage and Samsung won for price and speed.
Just starting to setup the new 990 Evo Plus SSD. Went into "Disk Management" created a simple drive and Windows assigned a letter to the drive location. While it will likely eventually live in my year old Asus laptop. I decided for the immediate future to install it in an NVMe enclosure I had for the holiday season to bring along some media files instead of a slower older portable hard drive. The price of the 990 Evo Plus is pretty competitive to purpose built solid state portable drives. It might be tough to let my Asus have it if I find that I like it more as a portable drive. The speeds so far on USB-C to NVMe are nearly 700mb/s. Took less than 20 seconds to transfer 26GB of files. Far quicker than I usually remember seeing for old platter hard drives to move that much data. They would need minutes. Granted USB-A vs USB-C on a thunderbolt port might make up for some of the speed difference. Bonus is how small and light this SSD is with my enclosure, easier for travel.
For such a tiny stick of gum sized storage. The 990 Evo Plus is amazingly fast. It might be debatable for how long SSD's live over time with constant read and writes. And you never hear about the great SSD's as most people only post about the ones that fail. I have a few SSD's in laptops and none have even hiccupped yet. Samsung makes them quick and reliable. That is why Samsung is at the top of my list.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus SSD is very fast. Assuming you have a motherboard with PCIe Gen4 and an available M.2 slot that supports Gen4, you too can achieve speeds of greatness. But all prerequisites (and joking) aside, this NVME SSD is pretty fast. This model is the 2TB model.
For me, installing was a breeze on my motherboard. The SSD does not come with a heatsink, but my motherboard has it built-in. Once it was installed, the bios detected it with zero problems. I simply booted into Windows and created an NTFS partition. Easy peasy.
The next thing was to run CrystalMark 8, which I typically use to benchmark my drives. I did a quick sanity check on my existing SSD, which is a PCIe Gen3. And as expected, I was getting sequential R/W speeds of 3500MB/s/1613MB/s, respectively. The 990 Evo Plus just about doubled those speeds using the same benchmark tests. I honestly can’t believe I went that long without switching over to Gen4 SSDs sooner. The only areas that seemed ok moving from Gen3 to Gen4 were the random access tests; I would say a marginal gain of 10-15% in each R/W category under CrystalMark.
Samsung claims speeds of up to 7250MB/s sequential read access, and I didn’t quite hit those marks, but it’s still pretty close and that is certainly worth the price of admission at its price point. I recommend the 990 Evo Plus SSD. Again, this review is for the 2TB; they also come in 1TB and 4TB sizes.

I really thought that this would a difficult install.( I don't know why I thought that.) But as simple as taking it oout of the box and screwing in a high-tech lightbulb. The SSD card is the only thing in the box. I installed in my desk-top PC, that aleady has 1 terabytes of storage in it. Fortunately, my PC had an extra SSD slot, so the whole process was painless, and almost instantaneous. It is pretty self explanatory and I would think that if you're looking at this particular piece of tech, that isn't your first foray into the world of PC builds. But if it is, i would like to share with you , just how easy it was for my to install this. First: I unplugged my PC and then pressed the power button for 15 seconds( to make sure that all of the power out of the system.) That is a very important step. I then, loosen the screw in the back of my PC. Then pulled the tab and released the side paneling. I then. located the extra SSD slot right next my original SSD. Removed the screw in the new slot, and carefully placed the new one in to the slot and gently place the screw back in place. Be sure tonot make it too tight. Don't use power tools. Once you've replaced the side paneling and plugged your PC back in, go to disk management and configure your new SSD. If you are replacing the old one.make sure that you back your memory unto an external drive to re-install. I definitely think it'dworth it. It can also be used to to replacce that meagar PS5 memory. But the toturial is on Youtube.

The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is a solid-state drive (SSD) designed to deliver high performance for a range of computing tasks. It supports PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 interfaces, which allows for faster data access compared to older models. This makes it suitable for activities that require quick data retrieval, such as gaming and video editing.
In terms of design, the 990 EVO Plus uses a hybrid approach with a host memory buffer (HMB) instead of traditional DRAM. This design choice helps reduce costs while maintaining competitive performance levels. The SSD is available in capacities from 1TB to 4TB, with the 2TB variant being used here.
Performance-wise, the 990 EVO Plus offers high read and write speeds. I found the EVO's low power consumption and high efficiency keeps the SSD very cool. Sure, there are faster SSDs, but you may be paying up to twice as much for storage that’s only marginally -- and not noticeably faster.
Overall, the Samsung 990 EVO Plus is a strong performer in the SSD market, offering a good balance of performance and efficiency, making it a solid choice for anyone looking to upgrade their storage.

I had just finished upgrading my gaming PC and grabbed the 970 plus to use as a game drive. I usually use slower drives for the OS since boot time is negligible and any increase in transfer times would benefit games more.
Installation was typical, so no issues there. Installed Samsung Magician and firmware is up-to-date. and proceeded to fill it up with some programs and software.
Using Crystal DiskMark with NVME settings I got some impressive results that gave pretty closely to what the box claims it could do. However, it was only sequential reads that could hit near 7000MB/s. Writes, while still nice, never reached the 7000 or 6000 mark.
These benches reflect into real world as fast load times. But that should be expected from any NVME or SSD. Even though you get huge numbers benches, the difference in driver performance flattens out once you step away from benches and put it to real use. So, while the drive wasn't significantly faster than my "budget" NVME it still shaved some precious seconds, lol.
Next was as 55GB large file transfer. My other NVME can sustain around 5000MB/s so its able almost keep up with the bench score on the 970 for writes. The copy was only able to achieve 3GB/s. I'm not sure if I was limited by the drives or my motherboard. Either way, copying a 55GB file from one drive to another was still blazing fast. Copying the file from my server to the NVME gave me enough time to go downstairs, fix a drink, go to the bathroom, start this review and finally done after writing 1/2 of this review, lol. So yeah, I'm not crying over not hitting 5GB/s.
Along with the 2 NVME I have 2 SSD's because they were cheaper at the time of buying for the capacity I wanted and I only had 1 NVME slot. Since my new motherboard supports 4 NVME drives I'm seriously considering replacing those two SSD with a couple more 970 pluses.

The 990 Evo everyone wanted

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Sure, the price may be a little higher than people wanted, but prices go up and down, sales happen, the important part to me, is that the 990 Evo Plus works like I want it to and fits in a PS5 slot just fine. I originally thought this would be great to add to my PC storage, which it would, but then I realized just how full my PS5 was becoming and since it has a M.2 slot and the 990 fits the required specs, I decided to upgrade that storage first.
Since you can’t update storage firmware on the ps5, I would have to put the SSD into my PC first to update it, HOWEVER, at this current time (dec 2024) there is no firmware update for the 990 evo plus according to Samsung support when I reached out to them. So luckily I could skip that step and went straight to installing into my ps5.
Installation was a breeze. Thankfully sony made the expanded storage easy to access in the ps5 and samsung followed all the standards for the M.2 design. No goofy adapters or anything like that. Just slide the storage in, screw it down, and you’re good to go. If you are installing on a PC or laptop, obviously your experience may be different depending on how easy it is to get to the M.2 slot. But there’s nothing wrong with the SSD. The ps5 has holes for different sized drives so I just lined up the holes and screwed it in place.
Once installed, I didn’t need any updates, but samsung does include instructions on how to use their management software, which IS actually really easy to use and not too bloaty or full of extras. It’s a basic app to check the health and updates and speeds etc of the drive. This obviously only works on the computer install, not a playstaion but it’s very easy to use. If they do come out with a FW update, I will just pop the drive into my pc, use the provided application and apply the update. I really enjoy how Samsung makes simple, well working storage with no extra junk. These components will last a long time and the storage is actually a full 2TB, not just close. (this may vary I suppose based on what you install on, but the buffer size added to cover the required files is nice. See photo for details)
After getting all set up on the ps5 and transferring over my games, I gave it a quick test on God of War Ragnarök and did not notice any slower (or faster to be fair) load times or any issues with playback of the game. The unit never overheated or warned me of anything wrong with the storage after many hours of nonstop gameplay. The drive seems to be functioning fantastic and works great in the ps5.
I had seen mixed opinions on if you should use this drive in the ps5, but I have no issues with it. I think the argument may be that there are better uses for the drive, or better drives to use in a ps5, maybe cheaper, but if you’re a fan of samsung drives and that’s what you want, then I don’t see an issue with this one. As far as specs, it qualifies or passes all needs to work in the ps5. You can also see in the photos the read speeds I got from the automatic test that ran after install.
OVERALL I’m really happy with this drive and feel like it will work great for my needs in the PS5 as well as in a laptop or PC if I ever move it or if that’s what you need it for, you won’t have issues. It is built well, with no extras, there is no heatsink but I had no issues with overheating.
I always trust Samsung to make solid, no pun intended, SSD’s and storage and this is no different. I know there was some disappointment with the 990 EVO but the 990 EVO PLUS makes up for all those disappointments. It does what you hoped the 990 would do, sure you have to pay a bit more, but if you’re ok with that, or find a good sale, jump on it, you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re looking for a top tier PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD, you know Samsung is the way to go. Year after year the Samsung Evo line has continued to impress. This powerhouse of an SSD aims to delivers incredible performance in all walks of computing.
The 990 Pro uses a PCIe 4.0 interface and can produce a claimed sequential read and write speeds of 7,450 MB/s and up to 6,900 MB/s, respectively. In my testing I was able to get sequential read and write speeds of 6328 MB/s and 5493 MB/s respectively. This puts it above the previous king of PCIe 4, the 980 Pro. As one of the fastest gen 4 SSDs available, it is ideal for all types of typical home workloads- gaming, file transfers, whatever you can throw at it!
In terms of value, the 2TB 990 Pro is one of the more expensive 4.0 options, but you get what you pay for. It delivers top-notch performance, is built to last, and has a high endurance rating of up to 1200 TBW. In addition, it comes with great software support from Samsung, including the excellent Magician application, which makes management and firmware updates easy.
The Samsung 990 Pro M.2 SSD is highly recommended for anyone looking for a high performance PCIe 4 SSD. With excellent build quality and a useful software suite, this is the enthusiast’s SSD.
