Incorrect File Size, Fills all 4TB SSD with 250GB

If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Do not buy this SSD if you value your time. I have wasted a whole week trying to copy files into this SSD. It artificially inflates your files and makes a 250 GB file transfer take up ~3 TB. I found other folks reporting this type of issues without any real solution. Likely to be a hardware malfunction. I recommend buying an SSD from a better company like Samsung. I'm returning my SanDisk SSD at this moment.

Okay, so I got this SanDisk 4TB portable SSD and it's pretty awesome. First off, it's really small and sleek, which I love. It's black, looks cool, and feels sturdy enough that I'm not worried about it getting banged up in my bag. The best part? This thing is fast. Like, really fast. I've been moving huge files around and it doesn’t even blink. It's got a ton of space too – 4TB is more than enough for all my stuff. I've got loads of photos and videos and there's still plenty of room left. Hooking it up is a breeze. It comes with a USB-C thingy and it worked straight away with my laptop and even my phone. Didn’t need to mess around with any settings or software, which is a huge plus for me. About the price, yeah, it’s not cheap, but you're getting a lot of storage and the speed is worth it, in my opinion. In short, if you need a lot of storage on the go and hate waiting for files to transfer, this SanDisk SSD is a solid buy. I’m pretty happy with it.

Cannot live without this SSD! I am a photographer so I have a lot of big files that can't be stored on my MacBook. I work off of the SSD and it has made my life a breeze. I cannot say enough good things about it. The speed, the value for what you get, the compact design, everything is a 10/10. Photographers - you need this.

Good points: Small (extremely portable). Comes with connectors for both USB-A and USB-C, so it connects to everything. Seems to be fast. Optional whole-disk encryption is very easy to use, keeps private data private. Bought it on sale at about half price, making it an exceptional value. Concern: On Windows, less usable storage than I expected. Explanation: On any device, files have 2 sizes: the actual size, and the amount of disk space they use. On this SSD, files are allocated in multiples of 1MB. So a file of 100 bytes uses 1MB of disk space. A file of 1.001MB uses 2MB of disk space. This wasted space was a problem for me. I replaced a 4TB hard drive with this SSD. With 1.5 million files, the hard drive had nearly 2TB free. The SSD has less than 0.5TB free. The wasted space might not be a problem for you. It depends on how many files you put on the drive.

I want to love these drives. They're fast, tiny, silent, and the price is right. But after my first couple months with two of these 4TB's, I would never buy a Sandisk again. I bought them specifically as shuttle drives for video shoots, and have also used them as edit drives with Premiere Pro. Maybe the third time I transferred with them, I had a strange experience where one of them simply unmounted from my laptop (14" MacBook M1 Pro). Didn't think much of it, chalked it up as maybe I jiggled a cable or something. A few weeks later, I came back from lunch and my Premiere project had crashed. Again, didn't think much of it, happens all the time. This week however, the real nightmare happened. Premiere crashed right in the middle of some very time consuming work, and the drive suddenly lost write access. I had to cycle it a few times for it to even come back online. Now having done and excessive amount of research, I see the rumblings on Reddit and elsewhere that these issues are not at all uncommon with these drives, and there's even a lawsuit about people losing their data. There's no way I would trust it with even low priority material after a failure like mine, and to see it so widespread is incredibly disheartening. For context, I'm a full time film editor and do small video projects in my spare time. I immediately formatted both these drives in APFS for working on my Macs, and only ever used the included cables. There is no reason why they should be failing this soon aside from a defect. Now of course I'm passed the return period for Best Buy, so it'll be a good test of the supposed 5 year warranty to see what happens next. I've since moved my project to a Samsung T7 and have had no issues the last few days. Can't give that one a glowing review just yet since it's early days, but it's definitely just as fast and portable, and runs noticeably cooler. Steer clear of these Sandisks and look at other brands.

I'm a pro video editor. At the moment I'm using a M1 Max MacbookPro as my primary workstation. This small SSD has essentially replaced my old big clunky RAID! It's fast, been reliable for 7 months (so far), and fits in my pocket. Only negative is that when traveling I have to make sure not to lose it! (I actually hook it inside my laptop bag when on the go).
