Wickedly Fast External SSD

Sandisk's latest Pro G40 External SSD brings Thunderbolt 3 speed along with durability and portability.
With external storages becoming smaller, lighter, and more reliable, what distinguishes each is their speed and features. Sandisk's external SSD supports Thunderbolt 3's technology and allows for faster transfer speeds through its USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface. Having an SSD over a standard HDD gives you faster read speeds and portability (among other features), but having a drive that supports Thunderbolt 3 provides quicker speeds when using it with a computer or device that also supports Thunderbolt 3. When not using it with a device that supports Thunderbolt 3, the USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds will also keep read and write transfer speeds quick.
In one simple test I ran using my Mac's Thunderbolt 3 interface, I copied 10 half gig video files and it took less than 3 seconds for the copy to complete. When testing the transfer speed with more files (2,500 files of pictures and videos), it was able to transfer them in 11 seconds! Since the Pro G40 is formatted in APFS (for use in Mac computers), it cannot be used simultaneously on Windows computers. This is not a defect but how all drives operate (needing a file system, in this case APFS). If you prefer to use the drive with a Windows computer, it would need to be reformatted and can be done so using Windows’ built in Disk Management utility. Keep in mind, if you reformat the drive, all data on it will be deleted and it is recommended for the data to be copied onto another device temporarily.
In addition to the super quick transfer speeds, the rubber type enclosure (on the sides and back of the enclosure) of the SSD offers durability being able to survive drops of up to almost 10 feet as well as having a crush resistance of two tons (4,000 lbs)! While I don’t expect to run over it with my car, it is nice knowing that if I dropped it and it gets run over, my data will survive. Along with drop and crush protection, the G40 is also water resistant up to 1.5 meters (a little under 5 feet) and dust resistant (IP68 rating).
As for the cons, I’m a little disappointed it doesn't include the latest iteration of Thunderbolt, which is 4. This would help for future proofing, competition against similar drives, and the speed that Thunderbolt 4 adds. The Sandisk Pro G40 2TB version, unlike the 1TB version, did not get too hot in my testing and can say I didn’t experience any performance drops while using it throughout my day.
Overall, the Sandisk Pro G40 is a great external drive for long term or short term storage of your data. It is wickedly fast and is great when moving over lots of files or when you’re simply attempting to load up files (such as when video editing or loading up a stored video game). I would recommend this to anyone looking to find a small, durable, and quick external SSD drive for storing and backing up their data.

WHAT? SanDisk Professional - PRO-G40 SSD 2TB External Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C NVMe Portable SSD in black. Out of the box this SSD drive is preformatted in APFS, a macOS drive format that natively supports Mac Time Machine backups. Plugging into my Mac required no more than confirming that I approved of the accessory, as is typical with Macs.
The newest iteration of SanDisk’s Professional Drive is compatible with both USB 3.2 Gen2 1000MB/s read and write speeds and Thunderbolt 3’s 2700MB/s read and 1900MB/s write speeds. How well it meets these specification I’ll talk about in a few minutes. But, moving my movies around takes seconds, not a snack break anymore.
WHY? When I’m operating last year’s Apple M1 Pro (14” 2021) with its 1TB drive, using a typical external hard drive can feel sluggish. Yes, we’re spoiled. I’ve been creating videos and working in Photoshop for 30 years, so I can easily remember an over-night rendering task. Even more contemporary drives will take hours to back up my MacBook Pro. The current M1 pro configuration with its Thunderbolt4/USB-C ports begs for a drive that can support some fraction of its potential 40GB/s data transfer. This drive gets a whole lot closer than most other drives to Thunderbolts 40Gb/s maximum speed. The advertised transfer rate 2700MB/sec represents over 50% (2.7GB/s / 5GB/s) of Thunderbolt’s top speed.
PERFORMANCE? This is a solid, attractive, rugged drive that’s easy to handle, even outdoors, because of its ruggedized, rubberized feel and crushproof, rustproof case. I’ve avoided packing my drives on anything but extended trips, but the Pro-G40 gives me confidence to take it more places.
There’s even a Thunderbolt 3 cable in the box to save you the frustration of shopping and validating the claims for all those cables you find online. The Drive is pre-formatted in APFS, just like my Mac laptop.
All my MacPro ports are Thunderbolt 4, so I don’t need to make a conscious effort to connect to the right one. But for others, just be attentive to this crucial detail.
My file transfer times dropped dramatically. I copy mostly large photo and music files from my MacBook Pro M1 to my backup and work drives. Where I once took a break and looked for a snack, I now have to expect those transfers will be completed quickly. I’ve moved 4K movies from my computer SSD to the SANDISK in under a minute. An entire 60Gb of music videos was moved onto this drive faster than I could untangle my mouse cable. The drive operates at a reasonably hot temperature when pushed but this is not unexpected under continuous use. There aren’t a huge selection of drives who have this set of features, proven performance, and can reach these speeds. I can recommend this SANDISK PRO-G40 for any power user.

Good for system backup

I use the "SanDisk Professional - PRO-G40 SSD 2TB External Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C NVMe Portable SSD to back-up my systems on my home computers. gaming SSD in gaming computer, partitioned to 200g C drive, the rest to 2nd partition to store my games and whatnot that don't need backing up. running easeus todo backup of about 150g system, highest compression, to that gaming SSD 2nd partition (quoted at around 400 MB/s), and then doing the same onto the Crucial X8 (quoted at around 1200 MB/s), I do find that this X8 does complete in about 1/4 of the time. About 7 minutes or so to make a complete system backup onto the X8, plugged into a USB 3 port, and about 8 minutes to run the restore when booted off a partitioned sector on the X8 running the easeus todo emergency flash restore app.
For anyone interested, things like virtual memory and all your steam games can be done on 2nd partition on your gaming SSD drive because they don't need to be backed up. having virtual memory set to a large max size, same min and max size, means no fragmentation of other files, and having that virtual memory on extra partition means it doesn't get backed up or anything, meaning your backup drives don't need to be as big. shrink your system partition to as small as it can comfortably handle, and you can easily back it up several times onto a drive like the X8. I use easeus todo backup home lifetime license for each of 3 computers, and use the settings image, 1 time only, system. incremental seems to be somewhat unreliable recently, and the speed of full system backup onto the X8 means not really an issue to do full system backup, then reboot to restore to make sure it works, and then copy to 2 other drives to make sure there are extra copies.
~PROS~
~Blistering speeds over a Thunderbolt 3 connection

~Handsome design

***STANDOUT FEATURES:*** 1.) It actually works as advertised. Copies and transfers are fast. 2.) It feels quality in hand. 3.) It looks expensive. 4.) Build is rubberized, weather resistant and rugged.
***SPEED:*** Copying files from the internal drive is very fast. Like any drive, longer file transfers with multiple file sizes varies the speed wildly. Regardless, this is the fastest external drive I have used. Whatever the drive is inside, there is a very good interface board to make everything work at blistering speeds over Thunderbolt 3. You'll max out the USB 3.2 Gen 2 rating (1050MB/s read, 1000MB/s write) every time.
***HEAT:*** External NVMe drives can get very hot depending on their enclosure. This can slow down performance and decrease user comfort drastically. The way this enclosure is built, you will have minimal issues with heat, even with prolonged use.
***CROSS PLATFORM USE:*** The drive I received was configured for use with Mac out of the box. That means the APFS file system. If you wanted to use it cross platform, you could reformat it to exFAT. If you want encryption cross platform, you'll have to fork out money for third party software on Mac (and format it as NTFS).
***CAMERA USE:*** This would be an ideal choice for videographers. IP68 rating means excellent dust, water, 3 meter drop resistance. You could have this on your camera rig and quickly offload footage to your editing computer.
***CONCLUSION:*** The only downside here is price. Ultimately, however, with high reliability, speed, looks and quality, you get what you would expect for the money.

Works Like an Internal SSD

The SanDisk Pro-G40 SSD is an excellent, portable drive for on-the-go and home needs. I use Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing on my Mac, and I was very well pleased with the speeds when I needed to open or transfer files. One thing that's often overlooked is the ability of external hard drives to sustain speeds. The speed rate I hit when I first connected the drive only curtailed off by a few 100 mbps after working for at least 45 minutes which is pretty good in my opinion.
One of the best things that the PRO-G40 does is save you from yourself. I've been guilty of carelessly dropping my backpack down to the floor that happens to contain my drive. I did perform a water resistance and drop test. I can attest that the SSD was still functional. I did not have the ability to conduct a crush resistance test near the limit specified in the description, but the grade A+ build quality caused me not to doubt the claim. The only complaint that I can register for the drive is that it is slightly warm after about 1-2 hours of usage, but it is cooler than the average external SSD and cell phone especially. Also, this drive is more optimized (as it relates to speed) for Mac devices, but will work properly for Windows computers.
Overall, I feel that my data is safe, protected, and that my editing workflow is unimpeded.

Fast drive for Final Cut Pro

This external drive is great. It uses Thunderbolt 3/ USBC port. The case itself is durable. It feels like it has a a rubber skin on it so it will not slide around the table. It comes with USBC/Thunderbolt 3 cable. I have been using it with my 2021 Apple MacBook Pro M1 and 2023 Apple Mac Mini M2. I use it mainly for Final Cut Pro. I am able to edit and playback 4K footage taken from my Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max and Sony ZV-E10 mirrorless digital camera. I have no issues at all. There are no frame loss during playback.
The enclosure can get a little warm during usage but not much. It is also silent. After formatting, you have 1.72TB of usable space. I have it formatted as APFS (Apple File System).
Something to note. I have noticed it "slower" with my MacBook Pro. I used Blackmagic speed test app. It reads at 1702 MB/s and writes at 1744 MB/s. On my Mac Mini, it slightly performs better at 2400 MB/s both read and write. Either speeds will handle my 4K footage. It performs fast enough.
My only complaint is the cable that it comes with is short. It works fine if you don't mind it right on the side of your computer. But I like to have my peripherals behind the computer/laptop. It can get in the way if all your ports are on one side of the laptop and you have a wired mouse. I wouldn't take a star off for that. This is a great drive.

This thing is extremely fast (which can’t be said of my WiFi connection. It does get pretty warm after a while, but that appears to be the norm in this and other similar drives and review of others who have had it for a while are reassuring as far as longevity. It made its connection quickly on my MacBook Pro with M1. It’s pretty compact, but can’t help but wish for even smaller in the future. While I’m wishing: Just as fast, but wireless, would be nice, too. Anyway, expensive but worth it if your situation demands extra high speeds!

When I’m backing up my 4K footage OTG, this purchase was worth it. Wanted a thunderbolt 3 portable drive for some time.
Great quality and seems very durable.
I did purchase a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable to use it with my setup. You can see in the pictures of this product they show it is connected to a coiled up cable. Big difference compared to the included 6” cable.

Incredibly Fast. Best Option for Extra Mac Storage

I love my Mac but Apple's pricing for extra storage is... well... let's just say unreasonable. If you are creative, work on video, etc. you are kind of stuck paying Apple. This is because as much as we all love the cloud, working on large complex video files locally is still the best option. Enter the SanDisk Professional Pro-G40 SSD. All black, with, it looks premium. It also comes with a short thunderbolt cable so it's ready to go out of the box. Built for your Mac, this connects using Thunderbolt and aside from a brief "permissions" pop up on my Mac M2, it seamlessly integrates with your Mac as an additional drive. So it was already formatted. And it's fast! Like blindingly fast - file transfers, completed before I can even blink. Unarchiving multi GB files on the Sandisk G40, as fast as doing them locally on your Mac. I have edited video natively on the drive and played it back without a stutter, blip, issue, or lag. I even pressure tested it by playing a large video file with DRM off the drive back though iTunes - and even that worked flawlessly. I just cannot fault the Sandisk Pro G40. In a few hours of use, I also didn't notice any real temperature increase, the drive got a little warm but not hot. I am impressed.Would definitely recommend, especially if you want extra storage for you Mac but don't want to pay Apple directly.

A Pro Drive for Anyone and Super Easy to Use

I’m astonished by how quick uploads and transfers were to and from the Pro-G40! I wasn’t hesitant on its performance because I’ve always trust my most precious photos to San Disk’s products.
Last November my 13 year old Frenchie passed away. It’s been so tough grieving him and every picture I have of him I’m scared to lose. I wanted the Pro G-40 for saving his photos but also for my trips for some contract work I do.
About 6-8 times a year I travel with my company to work on social media for our brands. Last October I found myself in Santiago, Chile managing hundreds of photos on a small SD card and it was horrible. My next trip will be a lot easier to maneuver through photos and data using the Pro G-40.
The body is really well built with matte rubber accents, smooth edges, a light case, and best of all a USB C cable to help facilitate those fast transfers.
I have the 2 TB Pro G-40 and the set up was as easy as plugging it into my MacBook.
My next project is to learn how to manage the photos, organize them, and archive them.
I’d love to surprise my grandma with all of her photos from the 50s-70s that she has in memory books by scanning them to my G-40 and adding them to her iPad for Mother’s Day!
A family member said they hadn’t seen me this dedicated to a project in a while so you can say, I’m having a lot of fun with the Pro G-40!

This is my second one, for my second laptop. They work as advertised on Apple MacBooks. I use them to store my photo library with full resolution versions synced to iCloud. This leaves plenty of room on my 1 TB internal SSDs for the rest, and room to operate at peak efficiency. That is, no penalty for lack of space.

A top-end SSD solution. It wasn't the manufacturer's fault that the iPhone 15 Pro Max rejected it as incompatible, but that was a disappointment. Although I had purchased it for that, re-purposing it as the external drive of my MacBook Pro to receive iPhone video was still a win.
The real reason for four stars instead of five was that it gets quite hot even when sitting there quiescent doing nothing.

This is the fastest non-DIY external SSD I’ve ever used. When connected via Thunderbolt 3 or 4 ports (and cables), I’m pretty much getting the read/write speeds claimed by SanDisk/Western Digital. As a Mac user, I use external SSDs for a variety of reasons. They work well as my Time Machine backup, in addition to storing my VMs for Parallels and other external data storage needs. And, I gotta say... this one blows all of the others out of the water in terms of speed, simplicity and reliability - but especially speed! I could not believe what a significant difference the additional speed this SSD would make. I've never had Time Machine backups finish so fast as they do on this. Highly recommend!
