This is our second Sony X-800 model. This came with 2 DVDs, I assume that the M2 means this. We had one for our living room TV and got this one from our home theater in the basement. Phot is tough to see it in our cabinet.

Absolute garbage. Bought this item a while ago. Never was able to actually watch a movie all the way through it would constantly freeze and skip and cause issues. I should have returned it a long time ago but just took it as a loss. I wish I would’ve trusted my judgement to get rid of it sooner. Do not buy this.

Sony ubp-x800m2 Sets the Bar High for 4k Players

This is no ordinary 4k bluray player, this is beyond that. The Sony ubp-x800m2 4k UHD bluray player is superb in all facets of 4k and more. It is a great addition to any entertainment system and will perform amazing 4k upscaling. The picture produced by the Sony x800m2 4k player is pretty much flawless and the sound has two options including a second audio HDMI. Of course it has built in Wifi and an Ethernet connections for additional options.
• Here is the list of 4K movies I have watched so far on the Sony x800m2: X-men Days of Future Past, Avengers Infinity War, Mission Impossible Fallout, Spiderman Homecoming, Matrix and Spiderman into the Spider-Verse. I really wanted to get a feel for how the Sony x800m2 lays out how good/bad films on a 4k HDR picture, sound and overall movie experience.
• When I held the Sony x800m2 in its packaging, it was on the heavy side for sure. It was about 10 lbs. Then I unpacked the 4k player and found it to be heavier (8.4 lbs) than previous 4k players and bluray that I have had. That is great sign of quality because the 4k player is built with a special “frame and beam” construction to it. This is why the weight is significant. The rigid frame helps to eliminate even the least bit of playback noise including the actual 4k disc drive (which is specially built getting rid of vibration). I was impressed as none of the movies I watched produced any vibration or noise. A big plus when watching a movie because no one wants to hear the disc spin or any other slight mechanical movement.
• This Sony x800m2 is pretty big. It is the biggest I have ever owned. The opening for the shelf is 17 1/4 inches, which is pretty standard on shelf openings in my experience. The Sony 4k player just fits (17 inches). But the large 4k player is probably as big as it is because it helps to disperse the weight and balance. The dimensions are Height: 2.25inches, Width: 17inches and Depth: 10.5inches. It should fit most shelf units.
• The connections on the back of the Sony 4k x800m2 are a follows: Coaxial digital out, two HDMI 4k connections (one dedicated for audio), and ethernet connection and it is also has Wifi. One missing connection I believe is a Digital Optical out. Most media components will accept Digital Optical ports so I wonder why Sony didn’t include it on the 4k player? Well they did include the Coaxial Digital out which is nice because they didn’t have the Digital Optical connection. The dedicated audio HDMI is great to produce better sound. When both HDMI ports are plugged in, the HDMI connect to video and the other to audio. Does this make a difference? Absolutely the sound improves. Do you have to do it? No, the sound still has great playback from the HDMI cable for the one slot labeled video/audio. I am very happy with the sound range of the Sony x800m2 just through the one HDMI connection.
• The picture on the Sony x800m2 is outstanding with HDR! The HDR options are HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The HDR10 option is 100x brighter than a picture without it. It really releases colors that are brilliant and enjoyable to watch. The Dolby Vision option has deeper darks and explosive highlights and rich color. If I had to choose one or the other, I would choose Dolby Vision because it really brings to life the picture quality that is hard to match. (The 4k HDR TV needs to have Dolby Vision option too). I uploaded a picture of Doc Octopus from Spiderman into the Spider-verse in Dolby Vision. The picture doesn't do it justice, but in person the picture is honestly amazing.
• Now the Sony 4k x800m2 has amazing upscaling on regular blurays. The picture is upscaled to about 4k level with the bluray. The picture really does look great and sounds great too. 24p true cinema and 4k 60p help the upscaling go to another level. The upscaling on this 4k player is the best I have seen. I was really surprised it looked so good.
• Bluetooth is available on the 4K player for Bluetooth Headphones and/or Bluetooth speakers. When you want to watch a movie and keep the sound at a minimum, use the Bluetooth feature that allows you to hook up your Bluetooth Headphones. You alone can listen to the 4k movie playing. Also if you have Bluetooth speakers, you can hook up them to the 4k player with Bluetooth. There is also a feature to help your Bluetooth sound better. The LDAC transmits 3x data more than a regular Bluetooth. Just another great selection on this 4k player.
• There is a USB drive on the front panel of the 4k player. Uses can be for stored pictures, media and films. Just another way this Sony 4k x800m2 rises above the rest.
• Some of the listening options that can be played back are Dolby Digital, DTS-HD, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Each of these settings are excellent but you may prefer one or the others according how the sound comes out of your speakers. Dolby Atmos provides an immersive sound that is object based that moves around you, even from the ceiling (if you have speakers there). Dolby Digital has been around awhile but in my opinion I think it is still the best. The sounds also move around seamlessly through the speakers back and forth in a 5.1 setup. DTS provides a adaptive sound in 3D through your speakers. The best way to pick the right coding setup for you, is to try them all.
Overall, the Sony x800m2 is outstanding! No noise vibration, a heavy chassis, upscaling blurays to 4k 60p, HDR with Dolby Vision, Bluetooth, and built in quality components make this Sony player an incredible step up in 4k players.

Amazing 3D, Great Picture and Audio Outputs

I have been looking to upgrade my old blue ray player (PS3) to a newer one for some time now. I decided to go with this player as it also plays 4k bluy rays. I was very impressed with the easy of use, simple menu navigation and amazing 3D picture quality. Keep in mind that I only have my Playstation 3 blue ray player to compare it to so my review will be based on that comparison.
::: Interactive Operating System (IOS) :::
The iOS is very sleek and simple which I personally love. After having to navigate the PS3 menu and long load times, it was a welcome change to have a simple turn on and launch option. The streaming services are very limited however since I am mostly going to use it for 3D movies I am ok with that.
::: 3D/4K Picture / Sound Quality :::
The picture is amazing along with the ability to modify the settings to match your expectations with newer tvs. I enjoy the 2 HDMI outputs in the back to be able to dedicate one for video and other for audio. This way it is a clean band for each. The 4K looks great to the naked eye, I do not have any professional tools to test the colors however looks great with no tears. The 3D quality is amazing, there are no tears, slowness, delays, freezing or saturation in colors. I am probably one of the few that still love 3D so am extremely happy with how this players handles 3D picture. It is very smooth, the active lens glasses that I use has no trouble interpreting the picture. I would strongly recommend this player if you are one of the forgotten 3D enthusiasts like myself!
Overall love this player for the 3D quality and sleekness. Keep in mind that I only have my Playstation 3 blue ray player to compare it too so most of these features are very impressive compared to that.

A great mid-range 4K Blu-ray player

I pulled the trigger on this player as my older mid-market 4K UHD unit from another manufacturer was just having so many problems not being able to play DVDs and Blu-rays in my collection without freezing or at least heavily pixilating. This is a known issue for many of these players across the various brands and price levels. We long for OPPO build quality for disc players and it's very hard to find it! And as the years pass no new players are being introduced to the market further constricting our choices. Given the situation I thought I'll try this mid-range Sony player and see what happens.
Well, so far, (and I'm knocking on the wood desk) no issues with playback over these first few months with any of the disc formats. I updated to the latest firmware right out of the box. I'll continue to keep fingers crossed.
The unit is well built for the price. It's quite a bit heavier than most players in this range due to its re-enforced chassis. Most operation is very quiet. When the tray comes in and out and the front flips up and down it does sort of "whir & clunk" as most all the other players do but there is no whirring, beeping or grinding while the disc actually scans info and plays. The quick play option loads the discs very fast indeed. Picture and sound quality are excellent. Much is made about the having to manually set Dolby Vision on and off with this unit but once you see a properly mastered 4K Blu-ray in DV format you won't mind the slight hassle. Seriously! I do miss a digital front display. You have to press the remote to get disc info to pop up on the TV screen. It's more preference I guess rather than an actual issue.
Overall, the player is worth the slight premium price and every once in a while, it will go on sale making the decision a little easier. It's Hi-res audio certified and plays SACDs so audiophiles might be interested as well as cinephiles. Here's hoping I get at least a few years of use down the line. I continue to firmly believe that while yes, streaming is getting better for a true 4K cinema experience despite continued compression and throttling from the on-line providers nothing still beats physical disc media for the ultimate in sound and picture quality.

Bad Unit???

Bought as new. It doesn’t turn on... I need to unplug it, and reconnect. Sometimes it works, but then, Disc Tray is unresponsive… I have to turn off the device and turn it on again to resume. This happens 2 out of 3 times… Since it has good reviews, mine is just a bad unit. Luckily, I purchased 4 year protection plan, so I will bring it in to the store. But it’s so frustrating…
