Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Jr. do not disappoint in this dysfunctional family drama. The acting is great and the storyline is interesting.

I watched The Judge, starring Robert Duval and Robert Downey, Jr., and Viincent D'Onofrio (who hardly looks like Downey's brother, but plays the role great anyway!) I really wanted to see it when it came out, but I was on the road, and I bought it when it came out last week. It was a very intense psychological movie, about a high-powered lawyer who grew up with a very abrasive relationship with his father, the Judge; he has stayed away from the family and the home town for over 20 years, but goes back when his mother dies, then quickly returns when his father, the Judge, is charged with murder. . .a hit and run accident that the Judge doesn't even remember! Very very good story; excellent acting jobs especially by the 3 principles, as well as the other supporting actors. Highly recommended. No action, no chases, just pure drama. Robert Duval has been nominated as best supporting actor for every group that hands out awards, and has won it for a couple of them. I would like to see awards for Robert Downey, Jr. and Best Picture, but with no special effects or extra glory or stuff, people aren't interested enough. Highly recommended!

THE JUDGE had to have been written with Downey, Jr and Duvall in mind, because the characters fit the actors like racing gloves. Added to the oft told story of rocky son-father reconcialliations is the matter of infirmity in old age, grinding down a once mighty patriarch. Even though Duvall's performance has righfully garnered critical praise and awards attention, don't think for one moment that Downey, Jr isn't acting up his own storm, to go toe-to-toe in every scene with Duvall. Realistic family dynamics and the details of (cantankerous) elder care, in the moment, more than makes up for any supposed lack of pedantic "character development." Take this film in as a richly layered sliceof-life and you will get what makes it so moving.

    Tense drama from Legends

Generations and old wounds are in tension as a successful son/lawyer learns more about legal problems for his father/judge, (for whom he has low regard). As the son's personal life and marriage are in turmoil, he is pulled into supporting his father about whom he has doubts, especially in regard to their relationship. Duvall is a crusty senior citizen used to being in charge but now he is in need of assistance and support from an estranged son, but he struggles to ask for the help he needs. This story leads us to explore parent-child relationships, the mysteries and challenges of aging, of coming of age, and returning to your home town and the people you left behind. As with most Duvall and Downey, Jr. films, this film addresses the gritty and seamier side of life and family relationships. There are no easy answers and provides a challenging journey as the story and sub plots unfold. Well worth the viewing with careful attention to the various relationships and plots.

Robert Downey Jr. has come into his own as an actor in this one. In my opinion, he gives an Oscar-worthy performance in The Judge. I can't get over how much he expresses with a look - heartbreak, annoyance, compassion, deep love, dismissal...it's all there on his face. Maybe this acting chop has been there all along. . .just not as finely honed as it is now. Outstanding performance!! Watch this movie if for no other reason than to watch someone who has matured into a very fine actor. I could watch this movie again and again. I got goose bumps, I chuckled, I got misty-eyed a time or three, Yup, it's that good!

This is a strong unique character-driven story of a dysfunctional family that is coupled by marvelous character chemistry throughout the entire cast. This is a highly realistic movie about a scared families emotional relationships that is superbly acted and gets even more complicated as the plot progresses. It’s a heart wrenching story that will emotionally connect and touch the audience. The two primary plot characters have a lot of baggage to deal with and they continue to complicate their issues which adds to the attention holding factor of the movie – it’s simply great entertainment.

    Really Good Drama

Let me preface the review by saying that I really became a fan of Robert Downey Jr beginning with Iron Man and moving into the other movies since then. I really enjoyed this movie. Robert Duvall is a terrific actor and does a great job as an older father. There is a small amount of comedy in order to lighten the mood at times, but this is not a comedy movie. It's a story that shows an adult man trying to help his father through a tough spot and repair their relationship at the same time. My wife and I both feel that it is a really good movie. If you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth a watch!

It's hard to decide which was the main/supporting actor in this wonderful movie. Both Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall complimented one another. This movie seems so very realistic until the final testimony scene in court where both exchange their personal feelings. Heck, even Billy Bob Thornton ' s small scenes were good. Very compelling story of love gone bad, old loves renewed, and tragedy that brings forgiveness before hard headed self pride completely destroys a family. This is a must have for your library.

    Father/Son Clash

This father/son relationship in The Judge seemed more true to life than two actors playing their parts. I thought that my husband should see the movie being a father of 3 grown sons. Robert Downing, Jr. portrayed a son who was so conflicted between defending his father in court or just walking away. Robert Duvall played a crabby old man who didn't want any help from anyone, especially his son.Yet he clearly needed help. Well done. I might add, the scenery was stunning in parts.

From what I had heard about this movie originally, I decided to rent it once it was on DVD instead of seeing it in the theater. After seeing it, I was disappointed that I hadn't chosen to see it earlier. Robert Downey, Jr. plays his typical character, but he's so good at it! The movie was a little long, but it was well worth it! I had to own it on Blu-Ray to watch it again.

Excellent movie and Robert Downey Jr and Robert Duvall are excellent together. The movie gives you the amazing personality of Robert Downey Jr and his humor and dramatic presence mixed with the prestigious acting of Robert Duvall who portrays a Stern unmovable force that has confrontations with his son because their personalities are so alike.
