I have been looking forward to this when it was announced some time ago as Project Triangle Strategy. Only dropped this project in name only.
First, analog control scheme for me in tv mode was bit sensitive. That is sole reason for 4 of 5. Second and on, this is a hardcore strategy game from Square Enix. Visually reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, which is not surprising as both are Square Enix games. Both games take time to ensure gamer is invested in the story line. You literally shape the story by the choices made along the way. The amount of information received from party members and NPCs get shaped from your choices. Example from early game in photo. I like the introduction of tension. This is occurring through wording and body language of characters. Don’t know what bad reviews are for when exposition is needed. You find out about someone through discussion. In a game, you either have to listen to audio or read it. It’s a strategy game. At some point, you have to READ to know what tactics you might employ to be successful. Can’t GUESS and hope for best. Tactics/strategy require some interaction and observation. Story, tactical decision and long implication, story setting, ability to shape future choices…wait the same items that games like ELDEN RING are not lauded on a more typical strat-rpg like triangle strategy. Really a shame. This is an excellent game. As an aside, play it in native Japanese! Dubs, my opinion, tend toward horrible. The natural inflection is conveyed better for me in its original language.

Excellent Tactical RPG with a Grand Story

There is a lot of dialog throughout the game, so you'll want to be prepared to listen through it if you want to learn about the world and the conflict it takes place in. At some point, I found myself more invested in the story, as I played the game, because of its large cast of characters, but you can speed through and skip the dialog if you just want to play the game.
As a tactical RPG, it delivers. The game gives a gentle introduction, and gradually ups the difficulty to the point where you need to figure out what works best against which units, where to position your team and take into account the environment. If you are under leveled and are defeated, you'll actually get to keep your experience points on your next retry, bringing your team's experience to match the recommended level of the game. This idea is genius, as it makes it fair and challenging to its design. If not there are opportunities to do "mental mock" battles, which are practice battles that also earn experience points. On top of all this is also a character upgrade system, that allows you to upgrade your teams with money and items earned throughout the game. The story's choices and branches also encourages multiple playthroughs, adding replayability.
Overall, Triangle Strategy, is an excellent tactical RPG, with a grand story to back it up, and its mechanics are deep and through making it a fun, challenging but fair game.

Most Beautiful 2D Game I've Played

Like its predecessor Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy is a visually gorgeous game that seeks to modernize the sprite-style graphics of games from the Super Nintendo era. The result is amazing, and has to be seen to be believed. The beautiful orchestral music also helps achieve the effect of realizing the way those older games looked and sounded in our imaginations.
On its own merits Triangle Strategy is a really enjoyable game. The long story sequences won't be to everyone's taste, but I'm enjoying the complex worldbuilding and unpredictable characters. The decisions the player must make at key story points have really made me sweat, and the tactical RPG battles feel fresh enough to set it apart from the likes of Fire Emblem.
The game has a free demo on the Switch eShop that allows you to play the first 3 or 4 hours for free and transfer your save over to the full game. Give it a try if you're interested!

I love tactical RPGs and this game does not disappoint. The gameplay follows a branching story with battles mixed throughout. Each character has three different tiers, and you can choose which skills to maximize to take advantage over each of their unique abilities. I played this game on hard mode and love the challenge. This elongated how long battles would take as sometimes I would have to redo them multiple times. Someone playing on an easier difficultly would experience more story as a result and therefore may not like the story to combat balance. If you like tactical RPGs with a good story and find the 2DHD graphics appealing, then definitely buy it. My best game of the year.

Pros
+ Gameplay is great - varied maps and terrain. Large roster with distinct movesets
+ Story is great - It's a slow burn about three neighboring nations with different ideals competing for resources.
+ Decisions matter - there are many decisions in the game where each answer has genuine merit and its hard to choose. You can talk to your allies to get their input, and I've found my choice swayed more than once by what they had to say.
+ Hard mode is HARD
Cons
- Game starts a bit slow
- Framerate drops occasionally

Strategy and Conviction

Indeed a strategy game of note.
Not necessarily for everyone, but if you’re looking for a strategy RPG, this should scratch your itch.
First off, the game is gorgeous. The HD-2D style is a beauty. It’s used wonderfully here.
More importantly, the game is tons of fun. The ‘conviction’ system means your choices have consequences but they aren’t readily apparent. The branching story paths lends to big replay value.
The music and voice acting are on point as well.
The opening couple chapters are noticeably slow. Lots of exposition. But, once past that, the game picks up apace.
Again, if you enjoy strategy or strategy RPG there’s lots to love here.

Engrossing Game

First off, this is a very story-focused game. With the exception of the exploration sections, the game is fully voiced. However, if you are not okay with cutscene after cutscene setting up the world, the characters, and the story, this is not the game for you. The game also features multiple branching paths and new game plus, so repeated plays are encouraged to unlock every character and see how the story can play out differently.
Combat is very straightforward. Play levels to gain experience and materials. Characters have unchangeable specialties, and it is up to the player to decide on the strategy they wish to employ. I do not have every character unlocked so far, but I read that there are possibly 30 different playable characters.
Overall, this is definitely a solid purchase, and I plan on playing it repeatedly to try and do everything.

If you liked the HD-2D of Octopath traveler evoking old final fantasy games, Triangle Strategy is Team Asano’s answer to final fantasy tactics. It has a gorgeous artstyle with a compelling story filled with dozens of characters. The battle system is really fun, especially if you enjoy tactics game. But the story is engrossing and gets you to want to play even more. Square did a great job with this one as the HD-2D games all continue to shine.

Despite its strange name, Triangle Strategy presents a strong narrative about three powerful nations that are in constant conflict over the resources monopolized by one another. Just as peace appears to be within reach, a murderous conspiracy plunges the land back into conflict. At the center of everything is a young lord, Serenoa Wolffort, who struggles to protect his friends and family from the flames of war, and must now make many difficult choices.
The game is split into two major gameplay elements, combat and decision making. Combat involves a chess-like level of strategic thinking, placing units carefully across the retro-styled battlefields to optimize their chances of handling the enemy forces. With several dozen characters to recruit, players will be able to form teams that can handle any and all conflict.
The decisions that will present themselves to the player will challenge their convictions, prompting careful thought to be considered when answering questions and deciding on where to go during the game's narrative, which can result in multiple and distinct paths, and four different endings.
Accompanying the amazing visuals is a soundtrack that is sure to go down in gaming history as a classic OST, featuring powerful orchestral tracks and even some rock-styled pieces.

Triangle Strategy is a tactical RPG with an amazing graphical style of 2D-HD. Think Octopath Traveler and Final Fantasy Tactics and you get Triangle Strategy. This game not only lived up to my expectations, but exceeded them. Great gameplay complemented by a compelling story which has choices that actually do matter and in which they aren't just simply black and white choices. I would strongly recommend this game to tactical RPG fans.

This is a great SRPG. This game however talks entirely too much. I am a bit RPG fan. I love a good story in the game, but I swear to god the ratio is like 7/10s dialogue 3/10s gameplay. The only positive to this though is that the story is really good. Definitely worth checking out if you like the genre.

A technically deep and complex strategy RPG. The branching paths are great, and has large cast of characters to recruit. Though some might find the story, though well written, to be very boring as it leans really hard into political & trade drama. So don't expect a story like what you'd find in something like Fire Emblem. Overall a solid time for strategy lovers!
