Robots taking over

I've had a robot vacuum before. They would get confused and get stuck underneath couches, dining tables, and chairs. Then, it broke. So I couldn't return it. So I had my doubts when it came to robot vacuums and wanted to wait a bit. It really is surprising how far they have come since then!
The programs that the vacuums have have improved tremendously! The first few times, it bumps around and tries to figure everything out. Then, the next few times it would know where the obstacles and walls were and not bump into them. It was scary and fascinating to watch. The getting stuck problem? No worries. It handles tables and chairs and couches just fine. Also, my place has those little elevated tabs on the floor between rooms but this vacuum has no problem just powering through those bumps.
I have a dog that sheds CONSTANTLY. I would clean the floor every day and still have dog hair stuck to the mop. This device does it for me. It really is amazing how much dust and hair and other things it picks up. It does a very good job. My dog also has a phobia of all things electric and she's warmed up very well to the Shark Ion so that's a plus for me.
It does make a beeping sound if it gets stuck on something and turn off. Some examples would be like my dog's toys, pieces of paper (which it obviously cannot suck up), electric cords, and whatnot. So you should be aware that the area that you want cleaned does need to be "prepped" for this. On that note, it also comes with strips so you cordon off areas that you don't want the vacuum to go to. It works so that's a plus!
The power supply dock is really light and small. However, the area that the vacuum needs for the dock is a fairly wide area (3 feet on each side and 5 feet in front) so that is something to be aware when looking for a place for it to dock. Ideally you would want to dock it in a central part of the area that you would want cleaned. Also, the vacuum docks itself...I was actually mind blown that it did this.
The battery runs for about an hour on a full charge and takes about 3 hours for a full recharge. I will say that if the area that you want cleaned is large, then an hour will not be enough. You might need/want multiple cycles.
It is nice to have these robot vacuums given how busy we can get. However, I am of the opinion that these cannot and should not replace a good manual cleaning. There are things that the vacuum cannot clean and it also does have areas that it seems to miss. As a supplemental tool for cleaning? It does the trick and more.

Running a small architectural firm, we are open 12-18 hours per day. What does that mean? It means people are constantly going in and out from jobsites and they are eating at all hours...and we allow pets.
The Shark ION Robot, the one "pet" in the office that cleans instead of leaving tracks does a good job of tackling the aforementioned challenges. It's a charming little mechanical "pet' that hums (pretty quietly) around the office, popping in to check on your and then goes on its way.
It comes with a cool remote that allows you to schedule cleaning times and also call the Robot ION back to its charging base.
We ran into one small problem that was easily rectified. (The manual gives you a heads-up about similar issues). We still produce paper drawings, and when left on the floor, our pet tries to chew them up! So with a little discipline, and the use of the provided BotBoundry Strips, we stopped that problem.
When filled, it's easy to clean the dust bin.
We like our mechanical friend !

This little robot works great. You can schedule it with the included remote to automatically clean while you are away. Run time is about 60 minutes and in that time it is able to clean my 1200 sq ft area that is downstairs. Object avoidance is pretty good and it hasn't gotten stuck under any of my furniture or tables. I do have a lot of toys in my living room from my toddler and it cleans around those very nicely. I have used the included boundary strips (is just a magnetic strip that you can cut in 18" lengths) and they work very well. I used it around my dog bowls and any low hanging drapes or area rugs that are flimsy. Emptying and cleaning the dust bin is simple and easy. They recommend you shake out the HEPA filter once a month, but I do it just about every day. It seems like it would really get clogged up if I waited a full month. The dust bin has been about halfway full each time I have emptied it and I have even vacuumed with my full size vacuum in the week that the little Shark ION has been working. I imagine at some point it might not pick up the same amount of dust and debris with daily cleanings, but so far it hasn't reached that point. The cleaning path is pretty random, but it seems to be getting just about every area in the 60 or so minutes that it runs. I have woken up every morning to find it back on its charging base ready to go for the next scheduled cleaning. The included side brushes that spin seem to help it pull in dirt and I see the brushes getting a bit frayed even after a week. I am not sure how long they will last but they are easily replaceable. The noise level is pretty low too. I am able to watch tv easily with this running and it is hardly noticeable. I think this is a great little cleaning robot for the money. It cleans well and just works, you won't be disappointed.

This little shark robot vac, is easy to setup and use. Works well at cleaning my hardwood floors, when the kids make lite mess or small spills.
The 720 seems to navigate around the house well, without marking up my large white baseboards. The scheduled cleaning remote is nice, would prefer a app as the remote may easily get lost or misplaced.
I find this to be good at light jobs, as a mop is still needed for dusting the floors or larger messes.

This was our first robot vacuum. The kids and I are quite entertained with this little bugger running around.
The Shark ION was a very easy setup from out of the box. The instructions were printed on a huge cardboard cover so it isn’t hard to miss. They were very easy to follow and not too many steps as well.
The vacuum is stationed within the living room and it transverses all around the first floor. It has to go within the hallway to get to the dining room and down another hallway to get to the kitchen. The flooring is carpet in the living room, hardwood in the hallway, hardwood/carpet in the dining room and tiling in the kitchen. The transition to each flooring is about a ¼ inch difference and it does not affect this vacuum. It still baffles me how it keeps track where the charging base is and knows which hallway to go down and which doorway to enter for the living room…. Which is awesome. The cleaning is a sporadic pattern but at the end, it gets the job done.
The noise level is at a minimal and I still have to say, for the first robot vacuum, we are quite satisfied and it is quite entertaining to watch.

Shark Attacks... Robots Invade

The Shark - ION ROBOT 720 Vacuum with optional scheduled cleaning is one of the newest iterations of robotic vacuums to hit the market. The Shark brand scores well with this model and the carefree robot seems efficient in its efforts to clean dust, dirt, and animal fur around the home.
This was my first experience with a robotic vacuum so I can honestly state I wasn't sure what to expect overall. Setup was easy and the instructions were clear and concise. Within a few hours of the initial charge docking, it was off and rolling. After bumping into everything initially, it began to settle down and track the walls and around furniture with ease.
I set it to run at night on my hardwood floors and tile kitchen (approximately 1000 sq ft). I awoke in the morning to find it had become stuck in the middle of our high pile throw rug (I hadn't placed the no-go strip around it yet). I reset it before leaving for work and came home to find it had cleaned the floors and had returned to its charging dock on its own.
The floors were reasonably clear of particles except under the edges of the counters of the kitchen since the robot did not get close enough to reach underneath. The dust collection container was packed full of dust, particles, and pet hair.
PROS
- Easy initial set up
- Strong battery life with over an hour of runtime
- Efficient cleaning after initial chaotic movements
- Click and go cleaning allows for the robot to do its job without the need of your presence
- Collector bin holds a reasonable amount and is easy to remove and empty
- Good sensors, won't damage furniture or fall down stairs
- Very effective on hard surfaces
CONS
- I would not consider this to be a traditional vacuum replacement!
- Unsure of the true cleaning capabilities on carpets (deep cleaning/suction?)
- Not effective on high pile carpet or throw rugs
- This model does not offer WiFi/Smartphone connectivity which would seem a standard feature today but does come with an upgraded model.
- Does not offer a mopping feature.
If you are looking for a robot vacuum, I believe Shark has done well with this model and design. Give it a shot as you will likely be pleased with the result.

This Shark Ion Robot is the easy way to keep one's house free of dust bunnies and fur balls. Super easy to get started out of the box by just snapping on the two side brushes on the bottom of the vacuum and removing some protective film from the vacuum. Simply plug the base charging unit into an outlet and allow the robot vacuum to fully charge.
Then tap the center Clean button and watch as the Shark Robot works its way around your furniture, cabinets, etc. to clean the floor. When it encounters an obstacle it will adjust its direction accordingly until it finds a clear path to continue on its cleaning journey. This unit also comes with a remote control one can use to program the vacuum to run on set schedules. One nice feature on the vacuum is a Spot mode that will thoroughly clean an area in a spiral pattern if one has a concentrated area of dust or debris.
In the handful of times we have used the vacuum thus far it has only gotten stuck one time. The vacuum will then quit running which I'm sure is a precaution to not burn the motor up. The unit does come with Botboundary Strips that can be installed to create "no go zones". We have not found this to be necessary for our home.
There is routine maintenance to be performed on the Shark Ion Robot. It comes with a small brush to routinely brush dirt off of the dust bin and filters. The recommended replacement for the dust bin filter is every two months. I looked to see if there was a spot on the dust bin unit to snap on the cleaning tool, but that doesn't appear to be the case. That would have been a convenient design option.
To summarize, I would not say that this replaces a normal household vacuum, but it is a great complement to use to minimize the typical daily fight against dust and dog fur in one's home. Look at the picture posted of the dust bin after the vacuum ran for its complete battery time of just a bit longer than one hour. It did an equally good job on tile floors, carpet and area rugs. We were pleasantly surprised at how well this Shark Robot product performed.

This is my first time having one of this robot vacuum and I love it. This Shark ion robot it’s easy to use, first charge it for at least 3 hours and use to remote control to start your robot vacuum do the job for you. The smart sensor navigation helps the vacuum detect any obstacles , easy buttons on top of the vacuum or just use your remote. The remote control help you schedule a time that you want the robot to clean your floors or just use it to command the robot to clean your floors; the spot cleaning feature help you clean a concentrated area. So far this robot vacuum save me time vacuuming my house while I can do some other chores around the house, with this robot vacuum you don’t need those heavy basic vacuums. So far it’s a great vacuum , I recommended you move any loose items off your floors ,like cables or anything that could get stuck on your robot vacuum.
A:You do not need a smart phone for the Shark ION 720 model. It comes with a remote control and does not have smartphone app integration. You can also start the cleaning cycle by manually pressing a button on the top of the vacuum.
A:The boundary strips do not need to be powered. They have magnets that the robot senses and turns around. The connectors allow you to make turns and angles because the boundary strip is semi-thick and will not turn sharply. You cut the strips with scissors or utility knife to length. If need to make turn or square a corner just clip connector to cut end and then cut next length. The connectors have hindge that goes from straight to 90 degrees.
For example, we used the boundary strip to “wall” off our dog’s food and water bowles. This keeps the robot from spilling the water. The bowles are on a small rectangle carpet in a corner. We only had to cut one long length from the wall past the Bowles. Clip on a connector to make 90 turn and cut the shorter side of the rectangle to reach the other wall. This made an L to cover the exsposed sides of the Bowles with the two walls on the other sides. We then slid the L under the carpet edge so can’t see it. The robot will then run up on just the carpet edge from the hardwood floor and then stop and turn away. It has never bumped the Bowles.
A:The robot will stop and turn away from the stair’s edge. It has sensors that detect the cliff and stop the robot from falling down the stairs. We use the shark on our second floor a few times a week and it has always stayed safely off the stairs.
It does run right to the edge before stopping and turning away so may be scary at first when watching it. However, as I said it has never run off the cliff.
A:Hello ZoLoWin,
The ION Robot should have no difficulty going over a 1 inch lip when transition from one flooring type to another.

A:It will certainly clean around the base boards. Our self-cleaning brushroll pulls in short and long hair and captures dust, dander, and allergens to prevent everyday buildup in your home. This includes pulling in debris from the base boards.
