After owning ink jet printers for the past 30 + years I'm finally done with cleaning printer heads. It hasn't been horrible until the past few years now that there's no kids or grandkids printing school projects and the ink clogs up from infrequent use. Just me & grandma printing the occasional monthly reports, return slips, a few blog writings, and year-end tax reports. We don't do much color printing anymore, but still wanted the luxury of being able to, so after much research we settled on the Canon Image Class MF753Cdw color laser printer. The setup was pretty straight forward. We just need to struggle through setting up the (send emails direct from printer process...) The build quality of this printer is excellent and the print quality is professional grade. I even printed a picture of one of my old bikes on standard paper and was amazed to see that the color renditions, sharpness, & quality was just as good on standard paper as it was from our old Canon Pixma MX922. It would be interesting to see how well it prints color on quality photo paper. Even the price was decent since it was on sale @ $220 off. I believe we paid less than we did for our old Pixma printer.

Finally had to replace my 13 year old Canon inkjet all-in-one. Decided to move up to color laser for my home office with the Canon MF750C. After a month I am extremely pleased by the no-hassle set-up to my wifi and my Mac. Airprint works flawlessly. First page prints in about 7sec. Color prints better than I expected. Sound is very minimal. This printer is big compared to inkjets, but looks impressive. Definitely recommend.

I've had this printer for around six months or so it has performed flawlessly. I'm still running on the ink that came with the unit. It is printed thousands of pages still works beautifully is extremely fast whether it's color or black-and-white. I have had the three canon printers in the last 25 years they have printed thousands of pages and service was easily obtained.

We're in a small office, downsizing from a bigger multi-function unit that was past its prime. Easy setup, connected to our network and all our computers had no problem connecting to it for printing & scanning. Touch screen doesn't scroll easily when trying to change to two-sided scanning, but we're getting the hang of it. Good quality printing for a decent price.

Does everything we need, the only thing so far is the quality of the colored print is not the same as really expensive printers. But for the price, you can’t beat it.

Great and Reliable Printer!

I have always used inkjet printers. For the common household, it makes sense, they are cheap, print what you need when you need them, and they are usually smaller in size. But there is a caveat, many inkjets aren’t too reliable. I’ve had a couple and what ends up happening to them is the usual ink drying up if the printer sits for too long. Laser printers solve this problem, you won’t have to rely on ink drying up since laser printers use toner cartridges. Furthermore, laser printers have better print quality and printing speeds. I have been using Canon’s M753Cdw laser printer for the past couple of days and in this review, I will lay down my thoughts and my answer to whether you should upgrade from an inkjet to a laser printer.
*TLDR at the bottom
=========
IN THE BOX/SET-UP:
In the box, you get the MF753Cdw laser printer, power cable, telephone cable, DVD-ROM, setup guide, and some paperwork. Note that there is no USB cable included. The printer is heavy so do get some help taking it out of the box if you can.
Setup should not take too long if you have set up a printer before. The part that was a bit frustrating was taking off the million pieces of tape on every inch of this printer but if you can get through that, the rest should be a cruise. Canon does give you several options to set up this printer. The options are wired LAN, wireless LAN, and DVD-ROM. I decided to go with the wired LAN option. I plugged my patch cable into the appropriate areas and made sure the printer had an IP address by checking the status monitor located on the screen. I then decided to install the printer manually through Windows “Add Printer” IPP device wizard to avoid the bloated software. But luckily, I later noticed that I didn’t need to do that initially since Canon printers don’t arrive with bloated software in the first place, unlike some other companies... Anyways, as for the drivers, I was able to install some generic ones from the wizard and the printer was successfully set up!
=========
PRINTING AND OTHER FEATURES:
I want to first say that this printer does have many features, way too many to list here but I will list some of the notable ones. If you are looking for high-quality prints for your word documents, excel sheets, or internet pictures, this printer will provide you with that and along with that, quick printing. I didn’t get to print pages equivalent to an entire thesis but according to Canon, this printer provides up to 36ppm(pages-per-minute) which is certainly quicker than all the printers I have owned.
Another notable feature is the ability to print a variety of paper sizes and media. From envelopes, pamphlets, banners, posters, and more. This is seriously useful for those who are in a small office. Scanning is also available with this printer. Scanning can be done from the computer or if you lack a USB cable, it can be done from a USB drive, email, or a shared folder on the network. The printer even can save the file in various file formats like PDFs and JPEGs.
One of the nicer features of this printer is the small colored LCD touchscreen. This touchscreen is easy to navigate and anything can be done from here. From making copies, scans, Fax, accessing the file server, tweaking network settings, and general settings. Canon also offers the Remote UI feature which is essentially a remote way to access the printer’s settings from your browser. Remote UI does contain plenty of advanced settings if you need them. I can go on and on about the myriad of features this printer has to offer but I would just bore you. If you are interested in seeing all the features of this laser printer, Canon’s website does offer a user guide. Simply Google the model number followed by the words “user guide.”
=========
PRINT QUALITY AND COST:
In terms of quality, all I can say is you won’t be disappointed. Everything I printed from documents to pictures were all crisp and clear. This laser printer offers some serious high-quality prints. On the contrary, if you are a photographer and need to print some high-quality photos, I do recommend looking at inkjets. This laser printer does print nice colored pictures, but I did find that my inkjet had better glossy-looking pictures which I found more pleasing to the eye.
The toner cartridges should not dry out and will last a while but when they need to be inevitably replaced, the cost can be daunting. The cost of new toner cartridges goes for about $100 for a piece of color toner and a bit less for black toner. The high-capacity toners approach $200. Do the math and you may end up paying between $400 to $800 for toners. Whether it is worth it, in the long run, is up to you, in my opinion, I do think the cost is worth it considering all the pros of laser printers.
=========
VERDICT:
Overall, this is an excellent colored laser printer. Probably my favorite out of all my previous ones. Not only does it offer high-quality prints, but it offers a myriad of features that may surprisingly be useful to you. Hence, if you are looking to upgrade your inkjet printer, I do recommend you give this Canon model a shot. Of course, I would consider what situation you are in first. If you are someone who prints once a month or so, I do suggest looking at other inkjet alternatives. If you are someone who prints a good amount, do suggest giving some consideration to this model of laser printer. I would look at an overall cost too, this laser printer is pricey along with its toners but is better long-term inkjets are significantly cheaper but are subject to ink drying up rendering them useless. I seriously consider these options before making your next printer purchase.

Fast printer let down by frustrating software

In 2017 I purchased my 1st Canon printer – a MX922 Pixma and while I liked the printing I returned it after just 3 days as its software/interface was just to frustrating to use. Unfortunately, it seems nothing much has changed – this printer suffers from the same non-friendly, unintuitive software/interface as the inkjet. The touch screen is a nightmare - can’t scroll without selecting an unwanted option, cant back out of an option as using the back arrow top left of screen as it just sends you into a “loop”. Paper settings in touchscreen do not match the options in the printer dialogue software so you get an error that has to be accepted to print. But even with all of this (give 2.5 stars for software/interface) I would recommend as the print quality and speed overrides these issues (5 stars) – at least it does for me.
Unpacking printer was easy except at almost 50lbs it’s a tad heavy. I could move it myself but be aware you might want to have someone help you. Plug it in and it turned itself on and touchpad walks you thru setup. But due to its sensitivity it was a tad frustrating but I did get it setup to use wireless. It comes with an install disk but I went to Canon website to download and install drivers/software.
As far as print quality I printed same 11 x 8 picture on my HP 9025E (normal print using HP photo paper), Brother Color Laser MFC-L3770CDW (using HP Laser 150g 40lb Glossy paper at 1200dpi) and Canon Laser (using same paper and settings used on Brother). The Canon was a little more defined than the HP inkjet and color was 95% as bright, the Brother lagged behind both in color and detail but is several years old in its defense. It took the HP 45 seconds from print button to photo. Brother laser took 3 minutes and Canon took 15 seconds - that’s fast and its quiet. Also, the laser paper is substantially cheaper (and can print on both sides) then inkjet photo paper. Double sided regular paper printing is fast as well whether black/white or color.
You can use web interface (Remote UI), using printers ip address, to access a lot of settings instead of using touchscreen. Unfortunately, it appears there is no desktop app for print settings but there are standalone Scan Utility and Toner apps which work well. There is an office store Canon Office Printer Utility, but it just sends you to web page support – not helpful at all. If using a windows computer, depending on what software you are using to print from, you may be able to access the print dialogue – it allows for easy access to print options such as page size, quality, color or black and white, etc. To access dialogue directly, do a search for printers in settings – select Canon printer then select printer preferences and it will open this dialogue. There are a LOT of options but once everything is setup to your liking you can easily save them for later use but once saved, I could not edit them (event though there is an edit button) and wound up deleting and starting over.
There is a Canon Business app for phones that allows for decent controls to print.
Scanning app worked well but size is limited to 11 x 8 size. Using photo option I scanned an 11 x 8 picture I had printed - it took 8 seconds to scan and the jpg it created was true to the original. There are presets or you can manually set options such as dpi, etc. There is also a “stitch” option that allows you to scan 2 items and then “stich” them together to create 1 item. I did use the “stitch” function and I did get it to work but it takes a little practice.
One of the advantages I like about lasers is the cartridges won’t dry up as can occur with inkjet printers.
3-year warranty is excellent.
Overall, the printer is fast and efficient, and while it is let down by clunky software I still would recommend it. And let’s hope Canon updates/upgrades it interface(s) soon

Multifunction Powerhouse

Warning: This thing is unexpectedly huge and heavy. If you’re picking this up in store, make sure you have room to house the retail box itself. And, make sure you have an extra set of hands to carry it in. It is heavy and it’s safer to have two people to carry the unit in.
I am excited to check out this multifunction printer from Canon. It handles all the office-type tasks you can think of. It scans, copies, prints, and even has a USB port for flash drives to print from. While it also has fax functionality, I highly doubt anyone would use it with email being easier to handle than fax. Also, as a forewarning, it does NOT come with an Ethernet network cable so you will need to have one on hand if you’re connecting it via this method. So, let’s get down to the gritty details.
Setting up was quite easy. I used an Ethernet cable for its networking consistency and reliability. After all, a multifunction printer like this is likely to be connected using a network connection anyway. Strangely, once I plugged in the power cable, the printer came alive immediately. I believe that devices should only turn on once you explicitly press the power button. It is a minor thing, but I expected better for a home/small office device like this. The printer goes through its first-time startup sequence and walks you through the setup process. It does require some tech (computer and/or networking) knowledge to properly set it up. So, if you have the information on hand prior to starting the setup, it should be easy to get it up and running. During the setup, it will ask you something about auto replenishment service, which is Canon’s auto-delivery of ink/toner service. Unlike a certain two-letter company, this does not require a recurring periodical fee. Instead, you’re paying for the ink/toner itself and nothing more. I will give my opinion on that later on.
My testing platforms are Windows 10 Home and 11 Pro. The process of adding the printer to Windows was simple and straightforward. It only involves going into Settings and adding the printer device. There doesn’t seem to be any additional software installed on either versions of Windows. This is a good thing as it reduces the dependency on additional software for printing. Scanning, however, is a different story. Scanning needs a scanner driver and software (MF Scan Utility) in order to work. Thankfully, the driver installation package, which has printer, fax, and scanner drivers, allows us to install the scanner driver alone.
Printing quality is as what one expects from a laser printer. Text is crisp and sharp and colors are nice. As an experiment, I tested printing a photo, which laser printers do not excel at. And, just as I thought, print quality for photos isn’t exactly great. It’s okay, but I would not use it to print photos (nor should anyone). The printer supports 2-sided printing, which is such a nice thing to have when printing several pages of documents. On scanning, I made a quick scan of a manga cover on hand. The image came out nice and detailed (at 300dpi scanning resolution). MF Scan Utility provides enough options to allow a decent amount of flexibility, including being able to save the scan as a PNG file for lossless quality and editing.
Setting system or device preferences is mostly done on the printer’s screen panel. There is an internal web host to change settings there but is very limited overall. In general, you’ll be at the printer itself tapping through the settings. I personally do not like having to do all preferences and settings from the printer’s screen panel, but this is how Canon designed it.
Okay, so it does all this and it all sounds good, right? Well, toners don’t last forever and will need to be replaced. And that’s where Canon’s Ink and Toner Auto Replenishment Service come into play. While I did not enroll into their service, I am glad to see, from what I have researched (at the time of drafting), that the cost is simply the toners themselves. There’s no monthly subscription involved. And, shipping is free as well. At the time of drafting this review, I can only find black toner cartridges at Canon’s online store. This will make it tricky to determine if signing up for Canon’s service is worth it (as opposed to finding it in other stores – ie. Amazon, Staples, etc.). But, it is many times better than a certain two-letter company with a convoluted subscription service.
Overall I am happy with this multi-function printer. It does what it does. It’s a shame I cannot test the fax capability. Yet at the same time and as hinted before, faxing is a shrinking and dying feature to have on a multi-function printer. But if you do need it, at least this printer will fulfill that role.
Verdict: Buy
The Good: Laser printing, color printing, scans, copy, USB port for direct print or saving scans
The Bad: photo print quality not good (obviously), all device settings/preferences done at printer’s screen panel, Ethernet cable not included, heavy (at 64lbs/48.5lbs)
The Ugly: the thought of a single person trying to carry the box unit into a home office

The Canon MF753CDW is my first color laser all-in-one printer from this brand. It prints, faxes, scans and can be operated using the walkup LCD touch panel, via a smartphone app, or remotely when connected via WiFi or Ethernet to a LAN/WAN. I use mine in my home office and it takes up a good chunk of desktop space while weighing nearly 50 lbs. Just make sure to leave space behind, above, and in front of it to open the scanner lid, paper trays, and rear access panel to clear any possible paper jams. Setup for the printer was quick and straight-forward by following the instructions on the color touch LCD and downloading and installing the driver/software from the Canon website (a DVD with the software was also included in the box), and I had it connected to my home WiFi network for wireless printing in about 5 minutes. There is also the option to connect directly to the printer via USB-B or WiFi-direct (compatible with mopria and AirPrint).
You can load a variety of different paper types and sizes including, but not limited to, A4, letter, legal, envelopes, and card stock in the built-in 250-sheet paper cassette and manual front-load 50-sheet pop-out tray. If you expect to print in high volume, it may be worth looking into the optional expanded paper cassette, sold separately, which holds an additional 550 pages and installs on the bottom of the printer.
Most of the time the machine is completely silent and in sleep mode, though it wakes up immediately when a print job is sent over or if the LCD is tapped. It initializes and starts printing within a couple seconds, and the first page general hits the output tray in under 10 seconds with a max continuous print speed of up to 35 pages per minute. When operating, it makes a fair bit of noise, but after printing it will idle for about 1 minute (producing only a slight hum) before switching to sleep mode.
Black and white text-only prints are clear, even, and crisp, while color prints and photos shine with high-detail, beautifully blended colors, and good tonal good accuracy over a wide range of colors. If I’m being picky, the color was just slightly under-saturated and reproduced with a softer focus than the digital image on the screen, but there was no visible pixilation, smudging, or banding, and the prints looked awesome even on plain letter paper. I would definitely feel comfortable printing photos and artwork from this printer for private or business use.
When photocopying black and white text using the 50-page ADF, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the duplicate did not lighten significantly versus the original, though there was a slight softening of crispness to the text. I did notice, however, that the letter proportions were not always uniformly reproduced. Upon scrutiny, some lines of text appeared slightly shorter on the copy, while others were stretched a smidge taller, maybe by a single pixel. The warping isn’t instantly noticeable, but since it appears to always affect the same lines on the page, once you start making copies of copies, the distortion is compounded and becomes apparent.
The LCD control panel is easy-to-use with taps and swipes if you’re familiar with smartphone or tablet operation, and there up to 6 customizable menu tabs so you can store your favorite functions and presets for quick access. There are several specific functions like copying/scanning an ID or passport, printing templates, and scanning to email or fax for networked printers with internet access. You can also print directly from, or save scans to, a USB drive plugged into the port on the front of the machine. As well, you’re able to send secure print jobs from your computer to be printed at the machine only after a PIN passcode is entered on the control panel.
The ‘Canon PRINT Business’ mobile app has a simple interface that allows you to scan to or print from your mobile device. Scanned documents will be saved/downloaded directly to your phone as PDFs or JPEGs. There are also some remote control functions available if you have the printer’s Remote UI feature enabled.
The one drawback may be the high-cost of its consumables if you buy genuine cartridges from Canon, however, you don’t have to replace them all at once as there are four colors: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. High-capacity versions of the cartridges (7600 pages vs 2100 for standard) or aftermarket toner may help defray the cost in the long-term if you print a lot.
Overall, this printer fulfills all the functionality that I would expect from a home office or small business printer. I was able to set it up quickly and start using it in under 10 minutes, and its versatility of features gives me the flexibility to securely print, scan, copy, and fax wirelessly at home. The print quality for both grayscale and color documents and photos is excellent, and scans are clear and true to color with high-resolution (600 x 600 dpi).

Somewhat compact, quick, clear printer. I love that it has a copier and fax built in as well. Printing is fast and the quality is great. The draft/low toner mode is basically useless, as the prints are way too washed out. Toner are a bit on the pricey side and have an average time before they need to be replaced. I had an older model that I ruined when trying to clean it out after using off brand toners, we went for the newer model since I really had great success with the old one.
